Cannel

•March 5, 2025•

By Janet Roney

What in the world is Cannel?  Along with gold, silver, and plumbago, Thomas Jefferson wanted Isaac Hill to look for it in central Illinois in 1809-1811.

I impolitely told you to go look up cannel yourself in a previous visit while I was in a snit over the thought that Hill’s guide was a hermit living in a hollow sycamore tree rather than Simon Kenton, “the greatest guide, hunter, and frontiersman of all time”. Sorry. If you are not one of the sweet souls who actually looked up cannel, cannel is coal.

2015

After the first dream about owning his own wildlife park, James Aikman, an Arthur resident, woke up and told his wife Kelsey. “On the night of October 21, 2013, I had a dream of my wife and I basically owning and running this wildlife drive-through park, so that next morning I told my wife about it, and she looked at me like I was crazy,” recalled Aikman to a full room during an economic luncheon at TnT Pizzeria February 19. “Our first son was going to be born in less than a month. She said, ‘We’ve got that coming up; this is not the time to be talking about this at all.’”

More Mysteries about Hill’s Mission

•February 26, 2025•

by Janet Roney

Isaac Hill was in a tight spot. His group was being attacked by armed Indians and was outnumbered 7 to 2. In his undated report (possibly 1811) to his brother Henry at Ft. Massac which he was sending “by the breed Ladoo by dark”, he said they were running out of lead shot, but had plenty of powder left. He had set a signal fire to get reinforcements from “John and Joshua from north”, who are Joshua Renfro and either John Beck or Isaac’s brother, John Hill.

2005

Bethany Mayor John Felter got a taste of post-9-11 U.S. security while visiting Washington, D.C. While touring the Smithsonian with Ed Cobau of the Illinois Municipal Utilities Assn., Felter was stopped by guards. “Boy! Word sure gets around!” Felter said when asked about the incident. “One of the people putting together the meetings and I were out sightseeing. We were just walking along visiting, and Ed was taking pictures of all the sights. He is a camera buff, and the buildings are so unique, you can get some great pictures. I guess we looked like we were up to something because these two guards came out and wanted to check us out. We never even thought about it being a problem. They took our information, and we continued on without any problem.”
