Keep Your Family Safe This Winter

News Progress Posted on November 11, 2015 by webmasterNovember 11, 2015

•November 11, 2015•

With cold temperatures on their way, the Office of the Illinois State Fire Marshal encourages residents to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning by ensuring their homes have working smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.

Carbon monoxide (CO) is a colorless, odorless and tasteless gas byproduct of burning fossil fuels. At elevated levels, carbon monoxide causes sickness and, if not detected, death. Simply having working carbon monoxide detectors in your home and regularly testing them may prevent awful consequences.

Fossil fuels such as natural gas are used to heat the vast majority of American homes, and faulty heating equipment accounts for nearly one third of accidental carbon monoxide deaths. These can include your home heating system, improperly vented gas appliances, kerosene or propane space heaters, charcoal grills and Sterno-type fuels.

“Most carbon monoxide fatalities happen in the winter months when residents understandably dial up their thermostats,” said State Fire Marshal Matt Perez. “Make sure your home has working carbon monoxide alarms so if something goes wrong with your heating system, you know when to get outside.”

Perez also reminds residents to never use a gas generator, grill, oven or range to heat the inside of their home or garage. Read More

Two hundred forty area students participated in Manufacturing Week tours this year. The tours were promoted and coordinated by “No Job Left Behind (NJLB)” a regional initiative that is bringing together educators and industry to discuss the need for a more skilled work force.

Started in 2013, NJLB decided that the poor image of manufacturing jobs was one of the deterrents for job applicants and that it would be worthwhile to open the doors and show people that factory jobs can become successful careers.

Students from Arthur-Lovington/Atwood-Hammond, Humboldt TLC, Okaw Valley, Shelbyville, Sullivan, Tuscola and Windsor toured regional plants the week of October 26-30. Participating businesses included Agri-Fab, Caterpillar, GSI-Assumption, Hydro-Gear, Justrite, Marvin Keller Trucking, MasterBrand, and Mid-State Tank. This is the second year for the tours and the number of participating students has more than doubled. Read More

25 Years Ago This Week

American Quarter Horse enthusiast Wayne Robinson of Bethany has qualified his American Quarter Horse, Brandy Mac Bee, for the 17th Annual AQHA World Championship Show Nov. 7-17 in Oklahoma City.

Pleasant weather, both warm and clear, contributed to one of the largest crowds ever to attend the 56th annual Kiwanis Club Halloween parade Wednesday night on the Sullivan square. More than 500 people received treats, and prizes were awarded to winners in 10 divisions. The Chris Ray family took first place in the family groups division followed by the Dan Flannell family in second.

Wayne Saddoris was the master of ceremonies, and Peggy and Phil Bryant were the judges for the annual American Legion Post 507 and American Legion Auxiliary pumpkin contest in Bethany. Jennifer Matheson won first place in the carved pumpkin division, with Scott Seeley second, and Linda Miller, third. The grand prize winners for the most unusual costume in the Halloween parade were Diane and Kenny Sanders.

Millikin University sophomore Lois Hagerman of Sullivan has been selected to play violin with the Millikin-Decatur Symphony Orchestra. Hagerman is the daughter of Dennis and Sandy Hagerman of rural Sullivan and is a 1989 graduate of Bethany High School.

Five students were elected to membership in the Junior Honor Society during installation Oct. 24 in the Bethany High School gym. Elected on the basis of scholarship, leadership, character and community service, the new members are Andi Marshall, Wendy Munch, Erin Parsons, Jamie Rutherford and Bliss Schwartz. Read More
