Big Money Under Pillow

News Progress Posted on September 23, 2015 by webmasterSeptember 23, 2015

•September 23, 2015•

It turns out a good source for retirement income for today’s kids in Illinois may be right under their pillows.

According to a new analysis by Delta Dental of Illinois, if today’s six-year-olds in Illinois invest all the money they receive from the Tooth Fairy, they could be sitting on a combined total of roughly $1.9 billion by the time they reach 67, the traditional retirement age.

“That could mean a whopping $14,000 per child when current 6-year-olds in Illinois hit retirement age if the child invests all of his or her Tooth Fairy gifts,” says Karyn Glogowski, vice president of sales for Delta Dental of Illinois. Read More

•September 23, 2015•

C.E.F.S. Economic Opportunity Corporation recently showcased their 50th year of accomplishments that demonstrated that community action helps people and changes lives. During the 2015 annual meeting some very special people and organizations were recognized as valuable community partners who enhanced the level of service to those in need. According to C.E.F.S. Chief Executive Officer Paul White, “Without community partners like Moultrie County Interagency it would have been difficult to attain and achieve the agency outcomes and successes.”

Moultrie County Interagency is comprised of members from several private, public and nonprofit agencies who have joined together to provide knowledge and assistance to the community, to spread awareness about area resources and to promote learning about the community and the needs of residents. Representatives from the member agencies meet monthly to review the previous month’s minutes and talk about any upcoming events. Each month there is also a speaker that provides information that interagency members may pass on to their clients. Moultrie County Interagency collects donations each year to be used by the C.E.F.S. Moultrie County Outreach Office to help people in need. These funds have been used to assist with hotel stays, prescriptions, car repairs, utility bills, rent and groceries. Every year the Moultrie County Interagency requests that a portion of the donated funds be spent on elderly or disabled people in need of assistance with their utility bills. Read More

•September 16, 2015•

Perkinson Art Gallery in Kirkland Fine Arts Center will showcase an exhibition of groundbreaking industrial designs of the Iannelli Studios through Saturday, Oct. 24. The exhibition is part of a book collaboration between Millikin University’s Bronze Man Books and author David Jameson, owner of ArchiTech Gallery of Architectural Art in Chicago, Ill. The book is entitled “Everyday Modern: The Industrial Design of Alfonso Iannelli.”

Alfonso Iannelli is most famous for his sculptural work commissioned by architect Frank Lloyd Wright for the Midway Gardens project in Chicago in 1914. Iannelli Studios maintained a long and illustrious business in industrial design throughout the 1930s, 40s and 50s, including contract design work for the Mueller Company in Decatur, Ill.

The exhibition will include original drawings, documents, blue prints, photographs and objects related to the industrial designs of the Iannelli Studios for companies such as Oster, Parker Pens and Wahl Eversharp. These unique artifacts are loaned from major Chicago collections.

Millikin Art Department and Bronze Man Books students were actively engaged in the editing, design and production process for both the book and the exhibit. Students have worked closely with Ed Walker, Millikin associate professor of art, and Dr. Randy Brooks, dean of the College of Arts & Sciences at Millikin, as well as Millikin alumnus Eric O’Malley ‘97. O’Malley has been instrumental in securing the connection with David Jameson as well as other collectors of Iannelli’s work in the Chicago area. Read More

First Christian Celebrates Back to Church Sunday

News Progress Posted on September 16, 2015 by webmasterSeptember 16, 2015

•September 16, 2015•

“Back to Church Sunday,” part of a national movement of churches across America, will be held at First Christian Church in Sullivan at 10 AM September 20. Everyone is welcome to attend.

National Back to Church Sunday (www.BackToChurch.com) is an initiative to “Invite America Back to Church.” It seeks to reach the “un-churched” and “de-churched” – people who have never attended church, or who once attended church but don’t any more – and invite them to return on a special Sunday. In 2013, a Gallup survey stated that 87% of people believe in God. Yet only 27% of those surveyed attended church in the last 7 days. Additional research reveals that although many people who don’t attend church say they would if invited by a friend, only 2% of Christians ever invite someone to church.

Pastor Grant Wade notes, “Back to Church Sunday is a wonderful opportunity for those in our community to connect or reconnect with a local church. There are many churches in Sullivan and I encourage folks to find one that fits who they are.  Read More
