A special Luminaria Ceremony held during the American Cancer Society Relay For Life of Moultrie County remembers those lost to cancer and honors those who have survived. Luminarias will be lit at Wyman Park on June 13 to represent these individuals.
Anyone desiring to purchase a luminaria at $10 may do so by contacting Alicia Pettyjohn at 217-356-4861.
“Seeing the candles twinkle against the water at the park and knowing what each light represents is a sight and a feeling that moves you. Lake Land College honored its students’ achievements at the annual Student Recognition Banquet held recently in Mattoon.
More than 130 students were officially recognized at the event hosted by the Student Government Association.
Students were recognized for their academic achievements, elected offices and organizational roles for the academic year.
Seven students received the Outstanding Student Award for their academic division, including Aaron Derby of Sullivan, Technology Division. The awards are given to a student from each academic division who has displayed excellence within his/her division as well as contributed to Lake Land College and the community. Read More

Three Lake Land College Honors Program students were recognized recently at the annual honors luncheon where they presented findings from the research they conducted through the Honors Program. Lake Land College recently recognized its Honors Program scholars where students presented their research findings and were recognized for their achievements. Throughout the year, these students have been conducting undergraduate research in a variety of topics.
Of those honors program members recognized was sophomore Adriene Lane of Sullivan, a speech communication major.
Lane, who is a 2013 Okaw Valley high school alum, will graduate from the honors program with full honors status, which requires that she earn at least a 3.5 overall GPA, graduate from an associate degree program, and successfully complete four honors course options while in the program. Read More

Although April had a few cold stretches, the statewide average temperature for the month was 54.1 degrees, 1.7 degrees above average, according to Illinois State Climatologist Jim Angel, Illinois State Water Survey, University of Illinois.Precipitation in Illinois for April was more complicated. April precipitation ranged from 2 to 4 inches in northern and central Illinois to 4 to 7 inches in southern Illinois. As a result, the northern two-thirds of the state was slightly below average, while the southern third was up to 2 inches above average.Fort Massac State Park reported the highest monthly precipitation total of 7.80 inches.The Midwest had alternating bands of dryness and wetness for April. The above-average precipitation in southern Illinois extended into Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky, and the rest of the Ohio River Valley.Just to the north was a band of slightly below-average precipitation across Missouri, northern Illinois, northern Indiana, and parts of Michigan.

Arthur-Lovington/Atwood-Hammond High School placed first overall in the annual Business and Computer Contest sponsored by the Lake Land College Business Division and Club IT.
Students from area high schools competed in the following categories: accounting, desktop publishing, general business and current events, Internet treasure hunt, keyboard timings, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, proofreading, and web page design. Depending on the category, students either completed a written test or a hands-on test on the computer. First place winners of each contest received a 3-credit-hour tuition waiver from Lake Land College. Read More
