Cultivating Creativity Children’s Art Exhibit Comes to Sullivan

The traveling exhibition Cultivating Creativity 2014-2015: Consolidated Communications Children’s Art Exhibit continues its tour by coming to Sullivan at the Elizabeth Titus Memorial Library. The exhibit will be on view February 24 to March 12. Cultivating Creativity showcases some of the outstanding art produced through east central Illinois school art programs. Presented is art by 51 students, each representing a different school. The art was created during the 2013-2014 school year. Read More

Change in USDA Rural Housing Programs

Changes in whether a geographic area is classified as rural or non-rural may affect applicants for the USDA Rural Development Single Family Housing (SFH) Programs.
For families and individuals to be eligible for application to the SFH programs, the property must be located in a “rural” area, generally non-metro communities less than 35,000 in population. Effective February 2, 2015, the Future Eligible Areas map were implemented. For Illinois, the changes primarily involve realigning boundaries along roads and municipal corporate limits rather than imaginary boundaries. This should help lenders and applicants more easily identify whether a property is eligible for USDA’s assistance. Read More

Four Area Student Musicians Participate in ILMEA Conference

Four Area High School Musicians Participated in the Illinois Music Education Conference (ILMEA) held recently in the Peoria Civic Center. Students were selected via an audition process from the district IMEA festival held last fall at Eastern Illinois University. Read More

Sullivan Spelling Bee Winners Announced, Six Moving On

The 2015 Sullivan School District Spelling Bee was held January 21 in the Sullivan High School Commons. Students in grades 4-8 earned the privilege of representing their grade level at the bee. The six winners and two alternates who are moving on to the Moultrie County Bee are Maggie McLaughlin, seventh,  Spencer Johnson, eighth, Raimi Gardner, fifth, Reagan Crouse, sixth, Paige McLaughlin, eighth, and Clayton Schmoe, fifth. Scholarship Application Forms Distributed

LIHEAP Energy Assistance Still Available

The C.E.F.S Economic Opportunity Corporation’s Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) still has energy assistance funding available for winter utility assistance. Any household that has applied as of September 1, 2014 or after would not be eligible to apply again. LIHEAP provides one-time grants to help income eligible households pay for their winter utility expenses.
C.E.F.S. began taking LIHEAP applications last September for the current program year 2015. To date in Moultrie county energy benefits totaling $122,165.00 have been approved for 245 households. The average payment per household was $499. Additionally in Moultrie county 10 households received $5,396.00 in emergency reconnection assistance. The average reconnection assistance payment was $540. Read More

New Local Jazzercise Instructor Offering Classes

Alexandria Tucker, a newly certified Jazzercise instructor, has begun offering classes in Lovington, Sullivan and Mt. Zion with all three facilities offering approximately 30 classes per week.Tucker is excited to join Jazzercise and work with the team of 10 instructors for all three facilities including her mother Tracy Garmon who has been an instructor for six years. Tucker earned the right to teach Jazzercise by completing an intense three day workshop and performing a letter-perfect audition. Read More
