LIHEAP Energy Assistance Still Available

The C.E.F.S Economic Opportunity Corporation’s Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) still has energy assistance funding available for winter utility assistance. Any household that has applied as of September 1, 2014 or after would not be eligible to apply again. LIHEAP provides one-time grants to help income eligible households pay for their winter utility expenses.
C.E.F.S. began taking LIHEAP applications last September for the current program year 2015. To date in Moultrie county energy benefits totaling $122,165.00 have been approved for 245 households. The average payment per household was $499. Additionally in Moultrie county 10 households received $5,396.00 in emergency reconnection assistance. New Local Jazzercise Instructor Offering Classes

Alexandria Tucker, a newly certified Jazzercise instructor, has begun offering classes in Lovington, Sullivan and Mt. Zion with all three facilities offering approximately 30 classes per week.Tucker is excited to join Jazzercise and work with the team of 10 instructors for all three facilities including her mother Tracy Garmon who has been an instructor for six years. Tucker earned the right to teach Jazzercise by completing an intense three day workshop and performing a letter-perfect audition. Read More

Sullivan Varsity Scholastic Bowl Team Wins EIU Honors Tournament

The Sullivan scholastic bowl team played in the 24-team EIU Honors tournament recently. They played some excellent teams, including teams from schools several times their size. The team started by defeating Palestine-Hutsonville 180-70, Edwards County 170-60, and an excellent Fairfield team (Sullivan was their only loss on the day) 210-140. Read More

County to Implement Three Election Judge Option for Upcoming Consolidated Election

Moultrie county taxpayers stand to save more than $4,000 this coming election.
According to Illinois Statutes (10 ILCS 5/14-3.1), in odd numbered years, the county clerk has the option of using three election judges per precinct rather than the five judges that are required in even numbered years.
In odd numbered election years, voter turnout is significantly lower. Therefore, after careful consideration and based on discussions with several election judges, County Clerk Georgia England has decided to exercise the odd numbered year/three judges per precinct option for the upcoming Consolidated Election to be held April 7. England stated that by utilizing the three judge option, taxpayers of Moultrie County will save approximately $4,350 in election costs. Read More
