The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency is inviting fifth and sixth grade writers and artists from around Illinois to participate in this year’s Poster, Poetry, and Prose Contest. The 2025 theme How Can You Slash Your Trash?, invites students to think creatively about haow to reduce the amount of waste they produce. This could include buying fewer single-use products, diverting food waste, repairing broken items instead of replacing or buying new, and recycling responsibly.

Red Cross offers steps to help you avoid a cooking fire on Thanksgiving

Red Cross Volunteers Assist 8 People Impacted by 3 Home Fires in the Past Week

Thanksgiving and the day before are the top two days in this country for the chance of a cooking fire to happen in someone’s home. Cooking causes an average of 158,400 home fires per year, which is 44% of all home fires in the United States. The American Red Cross offers safety steps everyone can follow if they will be preparing their family’s Thanksgiving feast.

I’m sure you’ve been anxiously awaiting my thoughts about the Eagle Pond duck dinner that Indian captive William Biggs described in his narrative about his travel through Moultrie County in 1788  I’ve spent some time pondering this. I first shared Bigg’s story with the readers of my “Kaskaskia Reflections” articles for the late Don Lewis’ short-lived Community Record newspaper twenty years ago. I’m still pondering it. It has kept me from worrying about really petty stuff.

Acro trial classes at Sullivan Dance Studio

The Sullivan Dance Studio is launching new free trial classes for flexibility and strength training. 

Starting on Tuesdays from 4:15-4:45pm for ages four to six, 5:15-5:45pm for ages two to three and a half, 6:45-7:15pm for ages five to eight and the teens class of 11+ taking place on Wednesdays from 6:45-7:15pm. 

There are limited spots for each class with limited days and times, to register for a spot in the class send ACRO TRIAL to the Dance Studio’s text line (217)909-9111.

Moultrie County Childcare Committee awards Proto-Tykes grant funds

The Moultrie County Childcare Committee recently announced the awarding of grant funds to Proto-Tykes, a well-established childcare provider in the community, to support the construction of a new facility. This expansion will allow Proto-Tykes to increase its capacity, providing additional childcare spots for local families and helping address the county’s growing demand for quality childcare services.

Harold Jones was selected as Illinois ‘Teacher of the Year. Mr. Jones has been a teacher at Sullivan High School since 1944.

King’s Cafe in Lovington held their annual Thanksgiving dinner of Turkey or baked ham and all the sides with pumpkin pie for $1.00.

Dessert is as easy as apple pie

The phrase “as American as apple pie” may lead one to believe that this classic dessert originated somewhere in the Americas. But this beloved dessert actually traces its origins to Europe. In fact, apples aren’t even native to North America, according to experts.

Apple pie is categorized alongside baseball and Coca-Cola® as truly American, but even though it was brought over to the colonies with settlers, it wasn’t until the 20th century that the treat was established as a symbol of national pride. By then, this apple-filled pastry had cemented itself in popular cuisine, and has since been replicated and reimagined in more ways than one might imagine.

Moultrie County election results

Within Moultrie County there are 17 precincts with over 8,820 registered voters and 6,558 ballots cast, during the time of presidential elections, we voted on new programs, positions and acts for the county.  

“We have lots of people come in a vote early, it seems this was the only place people wanted to vote on election day, we were non-stop busy- we’re actually a couple days behind schedule on our reports and such.” Jamie Helton, Election Deputy for Moultrie County, stated on behalf of their now empty office. “Yesterday was a lot of picking up the polling areas, we no longer have the ballot counter in here.”
