Allied Capital Title and The Giving Place are teaming up this chilly season to host a winter coat drive for Moultrie County. The drive, aimed to battle the cold for all ages and sizes, asks for new or gently warn winter coats or other winter gear for donation. The coats are made available for anyone within Moultrie County, those seeking winter gear or coats should visit ACT during business hours. The drive does not have an end in site so winter coats and other gear will be accepted at all times. There are two different drop off locations, the ACT building at 18 West Harrison Street in Sullivan between the hours of 8:30am and 4:30pm and The Giving Place drop off, located at 1102 West Jackson Street, Sullivan from 8-5. Dove, an organization which gathers advocates, religious institutes and volunteers to address unmet social injustices, focusing on domestic violence, homelessness and through community and support empowerment to take the next step. Dove works to see equality, justice and understanding amongst all  people. Each year the group faces challenges surrounding their communities and efforts to assist those in need. Leading their findings was a special thanks to Moultrie County and other neighboring counties for the support of helping a hungry child, a high school student without electricity, a widow choosing between her home and her medication and a single father needing car repairs and new school shoes. Dove’s biggest and proudest achievement, bring Christmas to over 3,300 children, pushed them even further to create lasting results and meaningful assistance to needing communities. The reflection letter was finished with a sign-off from Dove Inc. CEO Darsonya Switzer, immediately followed by the funding sources. Dove’s programs and funding for them has always been a large ordeal, needing to get the proper meetings and paperwork to file for grants can be tricky, however Dove was persistent gaining 80% of the organization’s income coming from grants, an overwhelming $3,924,960. Congregation Giving, $123,050, Families and Individuals, $141,800, Corporations Giving, $164,282, Admin fees and rent, $520,674 and Civil groups and events, $33,550.

At 74, Martha was the heart of her community. She visited with neighbors, volunteered at the library, and spent time with her family. But after her best friend moved away, she began stepping back from her social activities and spending more time alone. Martha became lonely and progressively more self-isolated. She began to struggle with forgetfulness, difficulty recalling conversations, and occasional disorientation. Why?

Eagle Pond Duck Dinner

We’ve been following the route from Waterloo, Illinois to Lafayette, Indiana that is described by William Biggs in his Narrative of the Capture of William Biggs by the Kickapoo Indians in 1788, which is on the internet. It is the earliest account I have found of traveling through Moultrie County.  

Using his narrative, which says they traveled about 25 to 35 miles a day, they arrived on the shores of Eagle Pond north of the present Sullivan about three in the afternoon on the fourth day of his captivity. “They had some dried meat, tallow, and buffalo marrow rendered up together, lashed and hung upon a tree about 20 feet from the ground, which they had  left there in order to be sure to have something to eat on their return.” He’s talking about one of the walnut trees in Eagle Grove on the northwestern shore of the lake!

Among the more indelible images to emerge on September 11, 2001 was the sight of two planes crashing into the North and South Towers of the World Trade Center. Still photos and video footage of those planes flying into the Twin Towers were the first images of the attacks many Americans saw, and no one who watched events unfold that morning will ever forget those images.
