Chamber Welcomes Americorps Fellow to Staff

Sullivan’s SPARK program is in the process of being revived after COVID put it on hiatus. The effort is being led by Sequoia Cornell-Conner, an Americorps fellow, who has been assigned to the Chamber of Commerce to bring back SPARK and work on community economic development programs. Read More

City Council Approves Matching Grant Request for MCHGS

Sullivan City Council met Monday and approved a matching grant request for up to $200,000 to the Moultrie County Historical and Genealogical Society. Commissioner Abbey Sherwood said she had many concerns granting any organization $200,000. Their TIF consultant said it makes more sense to have an agreement with Metro Communications than the society. The design of TIF is for projects that are central to the economic wellbeing of the community. “I feel that Sullivan does not need to be involved in a matching grant at this time,” Sherwood said.
Commissioner Mike Fowler noted that he could agree to the grant through the Titus funds only, and Commissioner Doug Booker agreed with Fowler. Commissioner Chuck Woodworth asked whether there would be open hours if they did renovations and opened in the new location. He was told that there would be. Read More

Sullivan Resident Writes Book on Genesis

Ed Dixon, 80, of Sullivan, recently finished his fifth book which is about the first book of the Bible, Genesis. The book is entitled Genesis as Understood.
Dixon believes that Genesis is the most important book of the Bible. “Genesis is the foundation of the Bible,” he said. “It starts with the creation of the world.” He noted that according to Genesis, God created the world in six days, and on the seventh day he rested. Dixon went on to say that some people believe that the seventh day was Sunday while others believe otherwise. Read More

Windsor High School will be celebrating Homecoming the week of September 27 thru October 2. The Homecoming Volleyball game will begin at 5:00 p.m. on October 1st. The Homecoming Dance will be held outdoors at the High School on October 2. Coronation will begin at 7:30 p.m. and the dance will be 8:00pm until 11:00pm.

Eller Receives Award From American Red Cross

Chase Eller, 17, of Sullivan, was recently awarded the American Red Cross’ Certificate of Extraordinary Personal Action for helping a choking child at a Decatur restaurant in January 2021. Established in 1911, the national Lifesaving Awards are issued by American Red Cross headquarters in Washington, D.C. to highlight whenever lifesaving skills are used.
Dawn Morris, South-Central Executive Director of the Illinois Region of the American Red Cross, presented the award to Chase during the August 10 virtual Red Cross South Central Illinois Chapter Board of Directors meeting. Read More

ALAH School Board Approves BLDD Architect Services For Facilities Planning

New personnel introduced themselves to members to begin the recent ALAH school board meeting including Kate Agney, Ron White, Ilene Martinez, Sailor Bower and Kylie Russel.
Superintendent Shannon Cheek informed the board that the high school received some damage during one of the recent storms including door strikes, damaged computers and some switch controls to cameras. He noted that most of it was technology-related.
Arthur Grade School also had some severe damage. The district will be filing an insurance claim soon. Cheek also reported that the boiler work is almost complete and the work to the roof has been finished.
An estimate of $7,700 was received in donations to the district. “Three Guys Concrete,” donated microscopes estimated in the amount of $1,400 to the high school. Teri Malin donated some benches in the amount of $1,500 and Mr. and Mrs. Wyhart donated a picnic table to the high school. The Athletic Boosters donated warm ups and uniforms and Master Brand donated $4,000 worth of school supplies to all of the school buildings in the district. Read More
