Interim Supervisor Recommended

lori-barringer•October 12, 2016•

Moultrie County personnel committee members unanimously approved the appointment of Lori Barringer as interim supervisor of assessments.

During the October 5 committee meeting chairman Roger Glazebrook recommended the appointment of Barringer who was chief deputy under assessor Cindy Kidwell. Committee members Kevin McReynolds and Ron White approved the appointment.

The county board will make the final decision at the October 13 meeting.

Assessor Kidwell had announced her retirement, recommending Barringer as her replacement, earlier this year. Kidwell died suddenly September 11, creating the need for the interim appointment.

County board chairman Dave McCabe explained the application process had been placed in motion with a November 1 deadline. Applications will be taken until then. At that point the county board will make a permanent appointment to the position.

As chief deputy Barringer completed the Certified Illinois Assessing Officer Certificate and Chief County Assessment Officer Certification. In addition, she has taken three additional classes offered by the Illinois Property Institute and Illinois Department of Revenue. Read More

J. Harold Jones helped Sullivan High School students understand math for 26 years.

Sullivan High School alumni honored Jones with the first Most Memorable Teacher award.

Before presenting daughters Nancy Davis and Kathy Kelly with certificates, alumni Ralph Kirk shared an understanding of how the man with an initial as a first name did more than help students with math problems.

Kirk explained that Jones touched and cared for students while staying involved with family, church, county government and various volunteer organizations. Named Illinois teacher of the year in 1964, James Harold Jones graduated from Eastern in 1937 and received his masters from U of I in 1941.

“He had a way of making complicated things simple,” Kirk recalled of the math teacher who was selected overwhelmingly for the first Most Memorable Teacher honor.

Photo by Mike Brothers Round Up Time Crowds filled the Sullivan IGA parking lot at high noon October 7 for a beef showdown. There were freshly charcoaled ribeye sandwiches served at 11:30, and a beef brisket cook off which was won by the Sullivan Fire Dept. While strolling around with a ribeye sandwich, crowds were guessing the weight of a prize Hereford bull, looking at Joe Scribner and Rick Montague’s beefed up cars and watching Gail Wolfe give free pony drawn wagon rides. The Sullivan American Legion Color Guard made a special appearance, and Bob Vail performed the national anthem.

Poppies to honor those who gave all

News Progress

On Friday, May 22nd, Ruth Keown, Vice-President of the Sullivan American Legion Auxiliary Unit 68, greeted the public at the entrance to the local Post Office, distributing Memorial Poppies. Each year, millions of Americans wear these Memorial Poppies in memory of American service members who lost their lives in war while serving their country, and to assist those Veterans who are now hospitalized or in rehabilitation, suffering from wounds and illnesses. Memorial Day poppies distributed by the American Legion symbolize the ultimate sacrifice made by service members and are a tribute to those who lost their lives in war. Wearing the poppy is a way to honor the fallen and ensure their bravery is never forgotten.
