12 Abandoned Properties Up For Sale in Moultrie

As trustee, Moultrie County has completed its tax deed proceedings on real estate properties that were delinquent for 2010 and prior real estate taxes. The county, as trustee, will now offer for sale the real estate obtained to the public. It will offer approximately 12 items through a sealed bid auction sale. All sealed bids must be in the Moultrie County treasurer’s office no later than the close of business on July 18, 2014. Read More

Legion, Community Pull Together to Fund Fireworks Show

Improvements still needed and to come

In February, American Legion Post 68 board member Mike Keown thought Sullivan would go without its annual Fourth of July fireworks display. With the majority of its board members replaced with new, including Keown, it wasn’t discovered until January that not only had the Legion missed its first $6,000 installment towards the display but that the Legion didn’t have the money.

“In my opinion, we weren’t going to have fireworks,” said Keown. “The Legion couldn’t pay for it upfront.” Read More

Important Fundraiser July 12 for Secret Santa Program

Outreach heavily depends on money raised at annual event

The Secret Santa program concluded its 15th year last December having spent around $13,000 on both area children and adults in need of clothing, food, and other resources throughout 2013. And though the program has a large outreach in Moultrie, most are unaware that approximately 80 percent of these funds are raised in one single day. Read More

A-Frame Signs Get Approval in Sullivan

More requests for downtown changes to come

The ordinance to allow Sullivan business owners to display A-frame signs on the sidewalk in front of their business passed unanimously last month.

The process of changing the ordinance started back on April 15 with a presentation from Cathrine Craig, owner of Cathrine’s Custom Framing on the importance of A-frame signs for local businesses. Just over two months later, Craig, in an interview after the June 23 council meeting, noted “This is a big step forward and has been a long and difficult process to get this approved.”  Read More

Storm leaves damage in its wake

The storm that occurred in the evening hours of June 11th produced wind gusts of up to 70 mph left many locals without power, with many experiencing damage to property ranging from mild to extreme.
