IDNR reps. say demolition not in their plans

by Keith Stewart
keith@newsprogress.com

In a meeting Friday, April 25 in Findlay, local officials along with members of the public and IDNR representatives met to discuss the long-condemned Eagle Creek Resort and its future.

In the face of recent speculation about demolishing and/or handing the resort back to the US Army Corps of Engineers, the meeting didn’t offer up much in the way of specifics but instead hinged on hope that the resort would not only remain just outside Findlay but that it would see the necessary improvements to reopen, in time.

“DNR at this point is focused on reopening the resort,” said Todd Rettig of the department. “What we want to make sure we’re doing when we reopen it is we have a successful pathway forward. We’ve had a number of operators in there that struggled. We don’t want to repeat that. I just want to ensure you that DNR’s focus as we stand here today–we came over here because we’re interested in making sure you understand that we do want to reopen the resort.” Read More

New ordinance will allow for sidewalk signs, merchandise

by Keith Stewart
keith@newsprogress.com

In last month’s first meeting, the Sullivan city council gave the go-ahead allowing for sandwich boards and the selling of merchandise on sidewalks.

Previously, the city code book barred the placement of signs and merchandise on sidewalks in Sullivan without specific approval by the council. Last August the issue was raised, briefly, whether or not to allow the signage, but when little support for overturning the ordinances appeared, the council dismissed it.  Read More

Board in favor, but will have to wait for vote

by Florence Hallford
Lovington Reporter

The last bastion of prohibited liquor sales on Sunday in Moultrie County may fall as indicated by the Lovington Village Board meeting Monday night.

The current ordinance on alcohol sales in Lovington restricts all sales of alcohol on Sundays, but at this week’s monthly meeting, Casey’s store manager Debbie Howell and regional district manager Colleen Leischner requested an amendment to the ordinance to allow sales from noon to close on Sundays, citing a loss of potential revenue due to boaters who filled their tanks and sought to buy alcohol.  Read More

Combine Fire

News Progress Posted on April 30, 2014 by webmasterApril 30, 2014

Photo by RR Best Combine Fire Sullivan firefighter Chris Coy douses a combine that caught fire just off the Kirksville road outside Sullivan Sunday evening. According to Sullivan Fire Chief Mike Piper, firefighters from his department arrived on scene (1350N & .25 miles east of 875E) at 5:05 p.m. to witness a combine fully engulfed after it, along with several other pieces of farm equipment, had just finished harvesting the remainder of last year’s crop. The fire was extinguished in approximately 20 minutes. Piper says he does not have an official estimate of the damage in terms of dollars but would approximate it between $250,000-$300,000. In addition to the combine being a total loss, a nearby tractor also suffered minor damage as did an auger wagon. Schlicht Farms out of Pleasant Plains, Ill. is the owner of the equipment. The cause of the fire is undetermined.
