Area Responders Learn More About Domestic Violence

Training Stresses uniformity of response and
safety for both victims and responders

Every 15 seconds a women is abused here in the U.S. This assault is usually perpetrated by someone intimately related to her. As such, domestic violence is the leading cause of injury to women in America, even more than car accidents. This abuse not only has an effect on the victim but greatly impacts the entire family, especially the children.

This past Friday, those who are trained to assist and respond to this domestic violence attended the Best Practices for Domestic Violence Response training at Mason Point in Sullivan. Sponsored by the Family Violence Coordinating Council, the training was made possible by an arrest grant awarded by the Department of Justice, Office of Violence Against Women and is distributed to encourage the arrest and enforcement of orders of protection. Arthur-Lovington School Board Mulls Tentative Tax Levy Increase

A proposed tentative tax levy increase was presented to the Arthur-Lovington school board Wednesday, November 13. This year’s EAV was estimated at $131,750,000 while last year’s total was $126,298, 911. An increase of 4.3% was calculated, but the board passed a 3.76 % increase which would avoid a truth and taxation hearing.  Read More

Though scattered and infrequent damage is still sustained

Sunday’s storm, which was responsible for approximately 80 reports of tornadoes including those near the Altamont, Tuscola, and Gifford areas, left Moultrie County, by comparison, in relatively good shape.

Nonetheless, parts of the county did suffer extensive damage from what is generally believed as straight line winds. Read More

Moultrie County First Quarter Honor Rolls

First quarter honor rolls for Moultrie County schools have been announced.

Lovington Grade School

Three eighth graders, five seventh graders, two six graders and one fifth grader received “A” honors for the first quarter at Lovington Grade School. They include Madison Brown, Janette Comstock and Samuel Renfro, eighth grade; Hunter Day, Ciara Emrick, Sean Evans, Katelyn Gingerich and Taylor Powell, seventh grade; Natalie Lambdin and Kenli Nettles, sixth grade and Tatjana Mehmen, fifth grade. Sullivan Singers Present…

Photo by Keith Stewart Sullivan Singers Present... The Sullivan Singers will perform “Catch Me If  You Can” the musical, at the Little Theatre on the Square beginning Friday. It will run through Sunday with one daily performance each day. The musical will begin at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. on Sunday. Doors will open 30 minutes prior to the performance’s start. Tickets are available from any Singers member or at the First National Bank. For more information, contact Sullivan High School at 728-8311 or email Connie Mulligan at mulliganc@sullivan.k12.il.us.

New Health Department Building Breaks Ground

$900,000 building to include much needed extra space

The Moultrie County board officially accepted a bid last month, giving the green light for the new health department building, which is to be constructed just south of Frontier and just east of the Elizabeth Titus Memorial Library in Sullivan.

The county received six bids and ultimately chose family-owned Building Systems of Illinois. Read More

Fifth grade class learns about Navy and
excellence from veteran

Just a kid of the countryside, Francis Marian Drummond Jr. willingly enlisted in the Navy on a Saturday in January of 1952 but only after his older brother Everett told him of the realities that would lie in store for him if he was drafted into the Army.

“I changed the plans,” said Drummond, who did in fact bypass the draft, which he would have otherwise soon experienced at the age of 19. “He told me that the last place I wanted to sleep in was a hole in the ground, so the next day my friend and I enlisted.”

Drummond’s brother had served in the Army during WWII after being drafted, joining several of the family’s relatives in service to the country, including his uncle Walter, his father’s youngest brother, who died during WWI. Drummond’s father, Francis Sr. had also served in WWI in the army as did another uncle–Bertram. Read More

Sullivan Fire Department Ready for More Room

Six additional bays to be completed by next November

After years of packing vehicles and equipment into a tight space consisting of five bays, the Sullivan Fire District is finally moving forward with construction to add six additional bays, making for a much roomier firehouse.

The 8,100 square feet addition will be added onto the south side of the current building at a cost of $760,687.25. Read More

Storm leaves damage in its wake

The storm that occurred in the evening hours of June 11th produced wind gusts of up to 70 mph left many locals without power, with many experiencing damage to property ranging from mild to extreme.
