Dine with a Doc at Senior Center

Dine with a Doc at Senior Center
On Tuesday, October 4, Dine with a Doc program offered by Senior Education Ministries was held at Mid-Illinois Senior Services. Dine with a Doc is a free program that welcomes the local senior public to hear an educational topic while enjoying a complimentary lunch. The program is a community effort of Senior Education Ministries, a doctor, a meal sponsor, area businesses and senior citizens. Each doctor has donated their time and various community businesses also participate by donating door prizes or providing the meal. This month’s guest doctor was L. Kaye DeSelms Dent (right), Doctor of Jurisprudence. Her law practice focuses on estate planning, probate, elder law and she is Medicaid Licensed in Illinois. She was joined for the presentation by Associate Attorney Erica Feldhake (left).

Mo. Co. Beacon Recognizes Consumers Employed in the Community

During the program, Moultrie County Beacon consumers who are employed in the community enjoyed lunch and were recognized with awards.

In recognition and celebration of this month being National Disability Employment Awareness Month, the Moultrie County Beacon had a luncheon for their consumers that are currently employed in the community. There are 13 people from the Beacon that are employed in the community at this time. Read More

On Friday, October 7, the Franklin family was finally able to see what their new home looked like and receive the keys. Jennifer, Abbey and Maddox were presented with a Bible, American flag and house keys during the house blessing ceremony. According to Cheryl Thomas, Family Support sponsor, there were six or seven families interviewed this year in the process of determining who would partner with Habitat on the home. Read More

Land of Lincoln Honor Flight

Tuesday, September 27th, I had the privilege of accompanying my father, Don from Lovington, on the Land of Lincoln Honor Flight out to see the Memorials in Washington, D.C.
When we arrived at the airport in Springfield, I started running into people that I know. On the flight with us were Terry Muzzy of Bethany along with Mark Conlin, Mac Bond and Roger Davis of Sullivan. The crew got us all checked in with our t-shirts, hats and name tags, served breakfast and then we boarded the plane to start our journey.
After landing, we were transported by bus to the WWII, Vietnam, Korean and Lincoln Memorials. Seeing the war memorials were very emotional moments for many of the veterans on the flight and it was an honor to be there with these heroes. Read More

SCED Awarded RISE Grant by State of Illinois

The Sullivan Chamber and Economic Development applied for and was awarded the RISE Grant by the State of Illinois. The grant of $40,000 is to be used to create a Comprehensive Plan for future growth and development of the City of Sullivan. A Comprehensive Plan is an important step in building a strong future for our neighborhood and it has been a much needed tool that will help organize and focus positive growth. Read More

Lawsuit Filed to Declare Safe-T Act Unconstitutional

On September 30, 2022, State’s Attorney Tracy Weaver filed a lawsuit in the Moultrie County Circuit Court asking that HB3653, the “Safe-T Act”, be held unconstitutional.
The lawsuit is filed on behalf of the People of the State of Illinois by Tracy Weaver in her capacity as Moultrie County State’s Attorney, it names Governor JB Pritzker and Attorney General Kwame Raoul as Defendants. The lawsuit seeks injunctive relief based upon the Act violating the Illinois Constitution; violating the single-subject law; violating separation of powers; being unconstitutionally vague; and violating the three-readings requirement.
