Larry McKown

Larry Lee McKown, 74, passed away Saturday, February 13, 2021, at Beverly Farms in Godfrey, Illinois.
Larry was born April 22, 1946, in Decatur, a son of Donald and Fern (Bolin) McKown.
Larry grew up on the family farm north of Sullivan and attended Sullivan schools. He was the first client at the Moultrie County Beacon and for many years a resident in group homes in Sullivan. Read More

Don W. Matheson, 89, of Sullivan, passed away, 6:40 a.m. Thursday, February 11, 2021, at his home in rural Sullivan.
Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, February 16, 2021, at McMullin-Young Funeral Home, Sullivan. Visitation will be held from 12:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Face masks are suggested and please practice social distancing for the services. Burial will be in Greenhill Cemetery, Sullivan, with Military Rites by the Sullivan American Legion Post #68. Memorials may be made to the Southern Baptist Church in Sullivan.
Don was born November 27, 1931, in Sullivan; the son of William G. and Vena I. (Wallace) Matheson. He married the love of his life, Dixie H. Meador, on October 28, 1950, in Corinth, MS, and they shared 70 wonderful years together. He was a Man of Faith and read the Bible 3 times in 1 year. He coached Little League for many years and was an Avid Cubs Fan. He was a great fisherman and hunter. Don worked 31 years at Caterpillar as a supervisor. He was served in the Army and was a Veteran of the Korean Conflict. He was a member of the Southern Baptist Church in Sullivan. Don loved traveling with Dixie to Branson and Colorado. His wish was to stay at home and the family all pitched in and took shifts to take care of him 24-7, and his Angel on Earth was his granddaughter Chelsey. Don loved his family and he will be greatly missed.
He is survived by his wife, Dixie of Sullivan; sons, Jim (Jennifer) Matheson of Bethany and Joe (Joannie) Matheson of Sullivan; daughters, Debbie Eaton of Sullivan and Cheryl (Michael Bodine) Scribner of Sullivan; daughter-in-law, Darlene Matheson of Charleston; former son-in-law, Scott Scribner of Greenup. Don is also survived by 19 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren.
Don was preceded in death by his parents, mother and father-in-law, Cecil and Lorene Meador; 2 sisters, Anna Mary Matheson and Carmen Kinser; brother-in-law, Jack Kinser; son, Bob Matheson; son-in-law, Allen Eaton.

Paul E. Shuman, 83, of Sullivan, passed away at 4:45 a.m. Saturday, February 6, 2021 at Mason Point, Sullivan.

Celebration of Life Services will be 11:00 a.m. Wednesday at the Reed Funeral Home with Pastor Mike Fender officiating.  Burial will be in Greenhill Cemetery.  Visitation will be one hour before the funeral.  Memorials are suggested to the FUMC Honduras Mission Team.  Face masks and social distancing is suggested.  Online condolences may be sent to the family at reedfuneralhome.net.
Mr. Shuman was born December 10, 1937 in Decatur, the son of Charles B. and Ida Wilson Shuman.  Paul was a farmer on the Shuman family farm.  He was a member of the Sullivan First United Methodist Church, Moultrie County Farm Bureau and had been a director for the Illinois Agricultural Association (IAA).  Paul married Ardis Hill on June 25, 1960 at Bloomington and she survives.
Also surviving is a son Eric (Lisa) Shuman of Sullivan; grandchildren Chance Shuman and April Shuman, both of Sullivan; brother Charles Wilson (Mary) Shuman of Annadale, VA and a sister Janet (Roger) Roney of Lovington and sister-in-law Lois Shuman of Sullivan.

He was preceded in death by his parents Charles and Ida and step-mother Mabel Shuman; son Scott; twin brother John and a half-brother George Shuman.

Wanda LaDean (Maxedon) Harris, 83, of Vandalia went peacefully with the Lord on Wednesday, February 3, 2021 surrounded by her loving family.

 

A Funeral Service in her memory will be held at 11:00am, Monday, February 8, 2021 at Hohlt & File Funeral Home, Vandalia with Rev. Dr. Ben Foxworth officiating.  Visitation will be held from 9:00am until time of service at the funeral home. Burial will follow in Griffith Cemetery, Brownstown.  Memorials may be made to donor’s choice. Online condolences can be expressed at www.hohltandfilefh.com

 

Wanda LaDean Maxedon was born April 26, 1937 in Allenville, IL, the daughter of Emery D. and Irma G. (Spencer) Maxedon.  She married Clifford B. Harris on December 22, 1956; together they shared 64 loving years of marriage.  In earlier years Wanda and Cliff ran Harris Radio/TV in Charleston, she worked as a nurse’s aide at Mason Point Retirement Center in Sullivan, and later was a homemaker raising six children on the family farm in rural Vandalia.

 

Wanda was a Christian woman who was strong in her faith, she grew up attending the Church of God, later in life you would often find her praying, reading her bible, and memorizing scripture. She enjoyed the more traditional things in life like gardening, canning, and cooking for her family; she also liked watching the country music shows on RFD every Saturday night.  She looked forward to the annual family reunion where she would get to reminisce with relatives, and couldn’t wait for Mother’s Day every year so she could talk to all her children on the same day.  She was so proud of her six children, she would tell everyone she met about them, leaving a lasting impact of love in their lives too. She was a caring mother and loving grandmother that will be greatly missed by many.

 

She is survived by her husband, Cliff Harris of Vandalia; sons, Douglas Harris and wife Clara of Auburn, Keith Harris and wife April of Greenup, Don Harris and wife Lisa of Flora, and Bill Harris of Effingham; daughters, Wanetta Harris and Michelle Harris of Vandalia; seven grandchildren, Austin “AJ” Harris, Clint Harris, Chad Harris, Ashley Bryant, Ashley Harris Bell, Jacob Harris, and Jessica Harris; twelve great grandchildren; and sister, Leatitia and husband Elvin Elder of Sullivan.

 

She was preceded in death by her parents and infant brother.

Donald B. Frevert, 76, of Sullivan, Illinois passed away at St. John’s Hospital in Springfield on February 2, 2021.

A funeral mass will be at 10:00 a.m. Monday, February 8th at St. Columcille Church, Sullivan with Father John Titus officiating. Following the mass, burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery, Le Roy, Illinois.
Don was born August 14, 1944 in Bloomington, Illinois. He is the son of Walter and Ruth (Becker) Frevert. He married Rose A. Zech on February 14, 1970 in Columbus, Ohio. After graduating from LeRoy High School, Don worked for Delbert’s Clothing in Arthur, Illinois. He then went to work for Progress Industries, Arthur, where he worked for over 40 years before retiring from Mid-State Tank, Sullivan, in 2010. During the 1960s, he served in the Illinois and Ohio National Guards for 6 years. He was a member of the Sullivan AMBUCS and served on the board of the Moultrie County Habitat for Humanity. He enjoyed music and movies, taking up baking and painting during retirement. Don was preceded in death by his parents.
He is survived by his wife Rose Frevert of Sullivan, Illinois, daughter Dr. Tonya Frevert of Charlotte, North Carolina, and sister Judy (Frevert) Kirby of Orange, CA.
Donations in memory of Don can be made to the Sullivan AMBUCS or Moultrie County Habitat for Humanity.

Jacob Allan Moxley, 34, of Sullivan, passed away, 1:45 a.m. Wednesday, February 3, 2021, at his home in Sullivan, surrounded by friends and family.

Funeral services will be held 12:00 p.m. Saturday, February 6, 2021, at Solid Rock Chapel, Sullivan. Visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Saturday at the church. Face masks are suggested and please practice social distancing for the services. Burial will be in Greenhill Cemetery, Sullivan. Memorials may be made to donor’s choice.

Jacob was born October 27, 1986, in Decatur; the son of James and Linda Moxley. He married Danielle Jenkins on October 6, 2012; she survives. Jacob was a technician at Sloan Implement in Atwood. He was a member of the Solid Rock Chapel and Boy Scouts. Jacob enjoyed working on cars, hanging out with his dad after work and golfing with his brother, Jeremy. He loved spending time with his family, friends and cherished his time with his children. Jacob is loved by so many people and will be deeply missed.

He is survived by his parents, Jim and Linda Moxley of Sullivan; wife, Danielle Moxley of Sullivan; children, Ivan, Lillian and Jax; brother, Jeremy (Kirsten Wickman) Moxley of Mattoon; uncles, Gary Palmer of Bethany and Jim “Buddy” (Renee) Palmer of Sullivan; aunt, Vicke (Brian) Wakeland of Bethany. Jacob is also survived by many lifelong and close friends.

Sullivan Boy Scout Troop # 39 was at the ready with delicious food in Kirby’s parking lot for famished deal-seekers on Friday, June 5th, during Sullivan’s annual Townwide Rummage Sale. On the menu were brats, steak sandwiches, pork chops, chips, sides, and cool beverages.
