James W. Yates

James W. Yates, 95, of Sullivan passed away 11:10 a.m. Thursday, November 22, 2018, at Eastview Terrace, Sullivan.
Funeral services will be held 1:30 p.m. Sunday, November 25, 2018, at McMullin-Young Funeral Home, Sullivan, with Pastor Charliam Renner officiating. Visitation will be held an hour prior to the services at the funeral home. Burial will be in Greenhill Cemetery, Sullivan, with Military Rites by the Sullivan American Legion Post #68 and the Illinois Patriot Guard. Memorials may be made to the Sullivan United Methodist Women or to St. Jude Children’s Hospital.
James was born July 30, 1923, in Findlay, the son of Harley K. and Estella M. (Clabaugh) Yates. He married Ruth M. Sampson on June 19, 1949, in Sullivan; she preceded him in death on December 13, 2017. James served in the United States Army during World War II. He retired from Caterpillar in August 1982. He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Sullivan, the American Legion Post #68, United Auto Workers #75 in Decatur, the Model T Ford Club of America and the Aladdin Knights. He enjoyed wood working, furniture making, going to Flea Markets and Antiquing. James was also an avid Cubs Fan.
James is survived by his sons, Michael K. (Patty) Yates of Washington, IL, and Kevin M. Yates of Sullivan; daughter, Marsha K. (David) Webb of Macon. He is also survived by seven grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, 1 brother and 1 sister.

James was born April 3, 1940 in Decatur to Joseph William and Mary Elouise Shaw Lindsey. He married Mary Margaret Lane October 7, 1965, in Sullivan, Ill. James was a butcher for many years.  Read More

Andrew O. Helmuth, 67, who lived south of the Otto Center in Arthur, died at 8:26 a.m. Monday, November 12, 2018 in St. Mary’s Hospital in Decatur. Funeral services will be held at 9 a.m. Thursday, November 15 at the HCK West Building in Arthur. Visitation will be held after 10 a.m. today (Wednesday) at the HCK West Building in Arthur. Burial will be in Otto Cemetery in Arthur. McMullin-Young Funeral Home in Sullivan is in care of the arrangements.
Andrew was born October 4, 1951 to Oba and Anna Mae Schrock Helmuth. He married JoAnna Kaufman November 23, 1978 in Arcola. He was a member of the Old Order Amish. Read More

Edna Mae McFarland, 95, of Mattoon passed away at 10:20 p.m., Sunday November 4, 2018 in Odd-Fellow Rebekah Home in Mattoon.
A memorial service in her honor was held at 12 p.m. Friday, November 9 at Mitchell-Jerdan Funeral Home, 1200 Wabash Avenue in Mattoon. Pastor Dan Haifley officiated. Burial followed in Rest Haven Cemetery. Military Rites were conducted at the cemetery by Mattoon VFW Post 4325.
Edna was born December 9,1922 in Gravel Switch, Ky., a daughter of the late Sydney and Geneva Roller Phillips. She married Warren Garrett McFarland June 7, 1945 in Norfolk, Va., and he preceded her death in 1992. Read More

Bruce Edward Frederick, 96, of Westfield, Ill. died Nov. 6, 2018 in Casey Health Care Center in Casey, Ill.
There will be no service.
He was born Oct. 2, 1922 in Moultrie County, a son of M.D. and Edna Matheson Frederick. Bruce was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving aboard the ship Saginaw Bay. He received many decorations including the American Pacific Theater of War Ribbon, Asiatic-Pacific Theater of War Ribbon with a silver star for Pala, Leyte, Lingayen Gulf, Iwo Jima & Okinawa Campaigns and Philippine Liberation Ribbon with one star for enemy air attack. He was a charter member of the Sullivan VFW. Read More

Whitehouse, 79, passed away Sept. 13, 2018.
Surviving him are his daughter Michelle Henson of Deland; son Douglas Whitehouse of Weldon and grandson Cole Henson.

Patricia Margaret Madigan Yargus, 93, of Marshall, Ill. passed away at 8:50 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 3, 2018 in the Gibson Center For Inpatient Hospice Care in Terre Haute, Ind.
She was born June 5, 1925 in Brocton, Ill., a daughter of Patrick H. and Rosa Ann Carroll Madigan. She married Lloyd A. Yargus Nov. 25, 1942 in St. Louis, Mo., and he preceded her in death Nov. 16, 2010.
Surviving are her children Loretta Allen of Marshall, Ill., Linda (Rick) Hardway of Petersburg, Ill. and Larry (Jenny Higginbotham) Yargus and Lyle Yargus both of Marshall; grandchildren Christina Hardway, Tricia Hardway, Joe A. Hardway, Anne Sheehy, Catherine Shaffer, Margaret Steward, Matthew Yargus and Adam Yargus; great-grandchildren Jonah Fried, Eliza Fried, Ava Hardway, Drew Hardway, Keil Roberts, Ella Roberts, Benjamin Sheehy, Tommy Sheehy, Rose Shaffer, Patrick Shaffer and Riley Newlin and her special caregiver Alona Conrad. James L. Winningham (Jim), 87, was ushered into heaven by his best friend and Savior, Jesus Christ, Wednesday, October 31, 2018 in the home of his daughter and son-in-law. He was surrounded by his loving and devoted family. They are rejoicing that he is healed and reunited with his mother Helen Ballentine and his father Jesse Winningham who was killed in a car accident when Jim was 2-1/2 years old.
Visitation will be held at Shrader Funeral Home in Arthur 5-8 p.m. Saturday, November 10. The Celebration of Life Service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, November 11 at REclaimed Food and Spirits 125 N CR 425E Arcola, IL 61910.        Read More

Funeral services for Brenda Lee Utley McCabe, 59, of Bethany were held at 2 p.m. today (Wednesday, Nov. 7) in Meyer Funeral Home in Newton. Burial was in Vanderhoof Cemetery, south of Newton.
The former Newton resident passed away at 7:30 p.m., a daughter of Jesse and Betty Lou Yocum Utley. Brenda worked at Hydro-Gear in Sullivan for eight years. She enjoyed playing Bingo and working crossword puzzles. She married Richard Lee McCabe April 2, 1998 in Sullivan, and he survives. Read More

The Rev. Herb Miller, 82, of Lubbock, Texas left his earthly body October 31, 2018, and family and friends gathered to celebrate his life of 82 years Friday, November 2, 2018 in LakeRidge United Methodist Church.
Herbert “Herb” Miller was born September 20, 1936 in Coal, Missouri, a son of Herbert and Pearl Miller, and they moved to central Illinois when he was three. He graduated from Lovington High School in 1954. On June 4, 1955 he married Barbara Harlin, and.they lived in Anderson, Indiana while Herb studied at Anderson College. In 1961, Herb began his first pastorate in Gravette, Arkansas. While there, he completed his senior year of college at Drury College in Springfield, Missouri and graduated in 1962 with a degree in psychology. Read More

The storm that occurred in the evening hours of June 11th produced wind gusts of up to 70 mph left many locals without power, with many experiencing damage to property ranging from mild to extreme.
