Sampson “Sam” D. Burtcheard, 79, lifelong resident of Sullivan, passed away at 6:30 p.m. March 3 with his wife by his side, ending a long struggle with Alzheimer’s.

Sam was born June 27, 1936 in Moultrie County, only child of Lilly Burtcheard. He retired from Bridgestone Firestone in Decatur. He married Carol Bailey Adams September 22, 1984. He was a die-hard Cub fan and any other sports that happened to be on TV. He spent his retirement years pursuing his lifelong passion…catfishing. He also loved trapping and hunting. Read More

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday in Reed Funeral Home in Sullivan. Burial was in Findlay Cemetery.

Mr. Briscoe was born May 18, 1931 in Moultrie County, Illinois, a son of Durward and Maurine Wheeler Briscoe. Arnold was a welder and enjoyed woodworking. He married Jean Evelyn Biedert June 9, 1951 in Sullivan, and she preceded him in death November 5, 1997. Read More

On Route 133 between Lovington and Arthur, power poles fell as a result of the storm systems that hit central Illinois in two waves on Wednesday, June 17th. These storms left many without power and caused widespread damage throughout the area, including confirmed tornado touchdowns in nearby counties.
