REAL IDs for Illinois Residents
•January 9, 2019•
Secretary of State Jesse White has advised that Illinois plans to initiate the issuance of REAL ID’s to Illinois residents who request them beginning in April of 2019.
There is not an urgency to obtain a REAL ID compliant Driver’s License because Illinois’ existing drivers’ licenses and ID’s are acceptable for domestic travel and entry into Military bases and secure Federal facilities until October 1, 2020. However, starting in April of 2019, if your Driver’s License is up for renewal, and you know you will need a REAL ID, you can start the process at the time of renewal.
Effective October 1, 2020
You NEED a REAL ID if:

• You use airplanes as a mode of domestic transportation; or
• You visit Military bases; or
