25 Years Ago This Week Ralph W “Dink” Chaney retired from his job as East Nelson Township road commissioner after 42 years. He recalls the winter of 1957 was the worst winter in his career. He couldn’t get the plows through the drifts and had to bring in a dozer. Some Sullivan Middle School students were found at Wyman Park enjoying the long awaited warm temperatures. LaCosta Meadows, Danielle Jenkins, Jamie Dunphy, Cassie Fifer and Jill Seelhoefer took turns on the tornado slide. EIU selects Newell as New Booth Library Dean

•May 2, 2018• Eastern Illinois University has named Zach Newell as its new library dean. Newell comes to EIU from Salem State University in Massachusetts, where he served in various library roles over the past 10 years. Those roles will allow him to bring both educator and administrative perspectives to EIU, which will assist Booth Library in meeting the evolving demands of its students and faculty. May is Lyme Disease Awareness Month Letter to the Editor, May is Lyme Awareness Month. Borreliosis (more commonly known as Lyme) is the greatest vector borne disease with over 300,000 new cases each year in the U.S. alone. The number of cases reported annually has increased nearly 25 fold since national surveillance began in 1982. There are five subspecies of borrelia burgdorferi, over 100 strains in the U.S. and 300 strains worldwide. ALAH Girls’ Track Team Places at Monticello

Kenli Nettles placed top three in four events, and Tyra Wingler placed in the top five. Benefit Cookout for Zoll Family

•May 2, 2018• A benefit cookout will be held 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday May 5 at Sullivan IGA for Pastor Brandon Zoll of the Sullivan Church of God. Ribeyes, brats and pork chop sandwiches are on the menu with the event sponsored by Sullivan Area Ministerial Ass’n. clergy. In early November 2017 Pastor Zoll was diagnosed with a grade II astrocytoma, which has proven to be an aggressive growth in the brain. He underwent surgery Nov. 15 which removed 80% of the mass. In the late afternoon of Saturday, May 31st, there was a single-vehicle accident, with the vehicle making contact with the Sullivan Agri-Fab factory signage located at the factory frontage on Hamilton Street. Per Sullivan Police Department’s Chief of Police, Andrew Pistorius, the airbag was deployed in the incident, and the driver refused medical treatment. No further information is available at this time.
