•August 2, 2017• Austin Hill and Jared Bunfill, Okaw Valley seniors, have had outstanding summers playing for the Sky Ice Elite. The Sky Ice Elite 17U basketball team experienced one of the more successful seasons in the program’s short history. The team is comprised of players from Okaw Valley, Decatur, Champaign, Bloomington, Mt. Zion and Springfield. The program, spearheaded by Eisenhower boys’ basketball coach Rodney Walker and MacArthur girls’ basketball coach Michael Williams, has provided an AAU experience for kids in grades 3-11. Moultrie’s unemployment rate in June 2016 was 4.2 percent, which was the lowest of 11 reporting counties in central Illinois. Iriquois County was next lowest with 4.1 percent improving from 4.7 percent in 2016. Douglas County improved one tenth of a percent over the 4.5 percent rate from 2016 to 4.4 percent in 2017. The program’s theme was Leadership Launch based on the movie Apollo 13. Circuit Clerk Cindy Braden explained Moultrie County courts introduced paperless proceedings with Circuit Judge Brad Rau on civil and small claim cases on that date. •August 2, 2017• Soil temperatures are above normal in mid-July, according to Jennie Atkins, Water and Atmospheric Resources Monitoring (WARM) Program manager at the Illinois State Water Survey, Prairie Research Institute, University of Illinois. Soil temperatures at depths of four inches under bare soil averaged 79.9 degrees on July 15, 2.1 degrees above the long-term average. Soils were warmer than normal for all but one day in the first half of July as daily high temperatures reached into the 90s and above.
