SOVCC Competes at Charleston

September 10, 2014 Competing at the Charleston Invitational last Saturday, the SOV girls’ cross country team took eighth, while their male counterparts finished 12th. “This is a good race to get our first invitational jitters out of the way,” said head coach Ted Walk. “This is the only time we see most of these teams since almost all are multiple times our size. Girls placed eighth and ran extremely well. September 10, 2014 2-0 run at home heading into own tourney by Keith Stewart keith@newsprogress.com After suffering two losses to begin the season, the Arthur-Lovington/Atwood-Hammond volleyball team rebounded with back-to-back wins at home against Villa Grove last Thursday followed by Monticello Monday. Compared to the Lady Knights’ first match against Tuscola, which they dropped 25-21, 25-17, Monday’s two-set win saw a more fluid offense with fewer attacking errors and much more solid serving. A Wet August Wraps Up a Cool, Wet Summer in Illinois

September 3, 2014 The 12th wettest August in Illinois finishes out the 10th wettest summer on record. While August was slightly warmer than average, the summer was cooler than average, according to Illinois State Climatologist Jim Angel, Illinois State Water Survey, University of Illinois. The statewide average precipitation for August was 5.18 inches, 1.59 inches above average. The wettest area of the state was Cook County. The largest monthly total was from a site in Cicero with 10.20 inches of precipitation. The Redskins got the ball back less than two minutes into the quarter. Four yards later, SOV was up 14-0. September 3, 2014 Martinez averaging hat trick per game by Keith Stewart keith@newsprogress.com What is more impressive than the Knights 3-0 start to their season is the fact that Jovany Martinez has had a hat trick in each game. In fact, so far, the junior has scored 10 goals and is averaging just over three per match. The fireworks first began in the Knights’ opener at Georgetown-Ridge Farm, whom ALAH defeated 4-2.
