July is Tie for Coolest on Record in Illinois

August 6, 2014 The statewide average temperature for July was 70.3 degrees in Illinois, which ties the record for the coolest July set back in 2009, according to the Illinois State Climatologist Jim Angel at the Illinois State Water Survey, University of Illinois. July 1936 (82.8 degrees) was the warmest July on record, followed closely by July 2012 (81.8 degrees). In just six years, Illinoisans have experienced the second warmest and twice the coldest July on record. … Read More

Customers Angered Over Flag Pole Removal at Hardee’s

August 6, 2014 Unkept flags spurs removal out of respect, says LeVecke by Keith Stewart keith@newsprogress.com The removal of flag poles recently at the Sullivan Hardee’s has spawned outrage from local customers. According to Regional Vice President Dave Becker, three flag poles were removed last week. Sullivan Hardee’s, franchise owner Jason LeVecke explained to the News Progress that upon a recent trip to the Sullivan location and seeing both the flags and poles in disrepair, the flag poles were removed. “Nothing upsets or makes me mad more than when I see one of our flags tattered or dirty,” said LeVecke. … Read More

Sarah Bush Lincoln’s mobile mammography van will be at the SBL Sullivan Clinic  August 15 and Hydro Gear in Sullivan  August 29. The van helps provide mammograms to women who may not otherwise have access to or be able to afford these life-saving preventive screens. Ill. Announces Launch of Homegrown By Heroes™

August 6, 2014 Illinois veterans soon will have the opportunity to leverage a national branding campaign to help market their farm products. The Homegrown By Heroes initiative, a product labeling program, will allow Illinois farmers, ranchers, and fishermen who have served or are still serving in any branch of the U.S. military to use a special logo on their agricultural products. Farmer training and education also are large components of the initiative, which will make informational resources available to veterans desiring to farm in the state. … Read More

Shirley Caspary Shirley A. Weber Brummett Caspary, 77, of Sullivan died at 2:40 p.m. Saturday Aug. 2, 2014 in Carle Hospital in Urbana. Memorial services will be held at noon Wednesday in St. John’s Lutheran Church in Mattoon. Following private internment services, the St. John’s Ladies Guild will provide a meal at the church. Receptions will be held 5-8 p.m. Tuesday in Reed Funeral Home in Sullivan and one hour prior to the memorial service at the church. … Read More
