Sullivan Boys Team Bounces Back for Win

•February 19, 2020• By Jason Brown NP Sports Editor The Sullivan boys’ basketball team lost to powerhouses Central A&M and St. Teresa but bounced back to defeat Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City. Against St. Teresa Friday, Sullivan fell behind early and could not catch up in the 68-24 loss. For the Redskins, Leyton Ellis scored a team-high six points, and Luke Harlin netted four points to go with two rebounds and two assists. OVHS Girls Track Competes

•February 19, 2020• The Okaw Valley girls’ track team competed in the Illinois Wesleyan indoor track meet Saturday. Kaylie Stauder took fifth in the 400-meter run, and Julia Hildebrandt placed sixth in the high jump. Mad McPheeters placed seventh in the 60-meter dash, and Macie Fleshner placed seventh in the hurdles. Karlie Stauder placed ninth in the pole vault and in the 400-meter dash. Kiss The Pig Contest Livens Mason Point’s Valentine Party

•February 19, 2020• By Ellen Ferrera for The News Progress Mason Point’s activity and medical staffs orchestrated a lovely Valentine’s Day program in the Knight’s Building on February 14. Nearly 70 residents were seated at the red, pink and white tables while they were entertained by Cindy McClelland Rhodes of Cindy’s Kareoke. Cindy has been performing her show for some 15 years for nursing homes and at American Legions. Illinois FCCLA Section 7 Conference Held in Tuscola

•February 19, 2020• Twenty-one students from Arthur-Lovington-Atwood-Hammond High School attended the Illinois Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) Section 7 Leadership Conference on February 11, 2020 in Tuscola, Illinois. FCCLA members from eight area schools made up the nearly 125 participants in the day-long event. Ambulance Request Considered by Sullivan City Council

•February 19, 2020• A request made of Sullivan City Council for help with ambulance service upgrades in 2019 will take a little longer for a decision following the regular meeting Feb. 10. Mayor Richard Glazebrook pointed out Sullivan Fire and Ambulance District Chief Mike Piper had requested a $422,396 contribution from the city TIF funds in Dec. 2019. Piper and Assistant Chief Larry Edwards explained that about $250,000 was for a new ambulance with the additional funds used to upgrade four units with loading assist equipment. Sullivan Girls Basketball Team Finishes Season with Conference Best Record

•February 19, 2020• By Jason Brown NP Sports Editor The Sullivan girl’s basketball team defeated Fairfield in the semifinal of the Sullivan Class 2A Regional Friday, but could not overcome a No. 2 state-ranked Paris team in the championship game. In the regional championship, the Redskins fell behind four points after the first quarter, but it was a 16-8 second-quarter run that put Paris on top 36-20 at half. In the second half, Sullivan was unable to recover and eventually lost 71-46 to the undefeated Tigers (33-0). ALAH Boys’ Basketball Team Wins Two Road Games

•February 19, 2020• By Jason Brown NP Sports Editor The Arthur-Lovington-Atwood-Hammond boys’ basketball team won two road games last week against Blue Ridge and Oblong, then lost at home to Arcola Saturday. Against the Knights of Blue Ridge last Tuesday, ALAH fell behind in the first half 21-19, but came back with a huge 17-5 third-quarter run that put ALAH up 36-26 heading into the fourth quarter. Landmark torn down



News Progress


The home at the intersection of Route 133 and Route 32 in Lovington was torn down last week. The house had become a major hazard after a box truck struck it, taking out a large portion of the north wall. The owners had the home demolished after it was deemed a public safety issue.
