25 Years Ago This Week The Sullivan High School Signal and the News Progress have received an “Exemplary Partnership” award from the Illinois State Council on Business Education Partnerships. News Progress publisher Marion Best and Signal Advisor Rebecca Lawson traveled to Chicago to accept the award along with Sullivan Signal Alumni Charley LeCrone and Jodi England, who were both past editors of the high school newspaper. Pastor John Hippard Pastor John Hippard, 91, of Shelbyville passed away at 3:21 p.m. Tuesday, January 14, 2020, at St. John’s Hospital in Springfield, Ill. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, January 18 at First Baptist Church in Pana with the Rev. Nat Kealan and the Rev. Tim Yankee officiating. Burial was in Glenwood Cemetery in Shelbyville with military rites by the Shelby County Honor Guard. A luncheon at the First Baptist Church in Shelbyville followed the burial. Rev. Shane Hartman is the Financial Assistance Coordinator of the Dove Financial Assistance (DFA) program in Sullivan. He explained the program as: “A joint effort of Dove, area churches and individuals to give monetary support to persons and families who are experiencing one-time emergency needs.” There are no income restrictions so anyone can apply by completing an application. Landmark torn down



News Progress


The home at the intersection of Route 133 and Route 32 in Lovington was torn down last week. The house had become a major hazard after a box truck struck it, taking out a large portion of the north wall. The owners had the home demolished after it was deemed a public safety issue.
