EIU Changes Tuition Rates

•December 11, 2019• Eastern Illinois University now offers in-state tuition to prospective undergraduate students from any state in the U.S. who have a 3.0 or higher grade point average. Previously, EIU only offered in-state tuition to students from Illinois and “collar states”—the six states that directly border Illinois – Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Michigan, Missouri, and Wisconsin. Elks Hoop Shoot Set

•December 11, 2019• The annual Charleston Elks #623 National Hoop Shoot is Dec. 14 at the Mattoon Middle School. The National contest in its 48th year is a free throw competition for ages 8-13. Three divisions each for boys and girls will shoot 25 free throws for best score. Winners advance to the district level in January at Robinson. James Johnson James Ellis (Jim) Johnson, 78, of Allenville passed away at 4:22 p.m. Thursday, November 28, 2019 at St. John’s Hospital in Springfield. Jim was born February 1, 1941 in Mattoon, the son of Oral and Minnie Pearl (Rardin) Johnson. He married Alice J. Protz May 12, 1961 in Mattoon.

After winning the 2nd Annual Maroa-Forsyth Tip-off Classic last week, the Redskins knocked off Arcola 45-19 last Tuesday. •December 4, 2019• By Jason Brown NP Sports Editor The Okaw Valley girls’ basketball team placed seventh in the Pana Thanksgiving Tournament Saturday then lost a non conference game against St. Anthony Monday. Against the Bulldogs Monday, OV fell behind 21-14 at the half and 31-22 after the third quarter. OV made a run in the fourth quarter, outscoring St. Anthony 18-15, but it wasn’t enough. They eventually lost 46-40. Senior Kate Jeffers scored a game-high 21 points, including eight in the fourth quarter. Ambulance Purchase Plan Presented to Sullivan Council

•December 4, 2019• By Mike Brothers Sullivan City Council was asked for a $422,396 TIF district contribution toward the purchase of an ambulance at the Nov. 25 meeting. Sullivan Fire Protection Chief Mike Piper and Assistant Chief Larry Edwards were seeking an intergovernmental agreement with the city for the ambulance purchase. They explained the ambulance department has experienced an increase in simultaneous calls. That, along with additional care facilities in a county without a hospital, is putting more wear on the existing units.
