25 Years Ago This Week
A communications tower is under construction by Cellular One west of Keller Cemetery, south of Lovington on Route 32. Intermittent cell service in the area prompted the tower upgrade.
Joe and Joan Pound met Bob and Mary Ellen Hood who had lived in Manila in the Philippines for 14 years. The Hoods led the Pounds on a cultural and historic tour of the city.
Prize winners at the 40th Kiwanis Easter Egg hunt in Wyman Park included Jamison Miller, Lukas Golden, Tori McFarland, Drew Coslow; Michelle Manning, Amber Burgess, Jordan Stewart, Benjamin Netherton; Brandi Piatt, Derek VanWinsen, Dristyl Coon, Jimmy Slater; Shawn Reynolds, Brett Craig, Jennifer Roberts and Matthew Griffith. Winners’ ages range from two to nine years.
Lovington Kiwanis Club awarded fifth and sixth grade Lovington Grade School students for good grades. Included were Zachary Clark, Stephanie Eccles, Tim Roberts, Katie Van Pelt, Kristina Platz and Derek Wells. Presenters included Kiwanis president Dale Jones, treasurer Sally Foley and Lovington Supt. Dick Nelson.

Dean Weaver of Sullivan was inducted into the Alpha Theta Psi chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, national academic honors society. To join a student must have a minimum 3.5 point average on a 4.0 scale.
Sullivan first grader Nicole Jesse and Findlay sixth grader Jennifer Ryan placed in the Nutrition Poster Contest. Jesse was third and Ryan second in their respective divisions of the Illinois Department of Public Health sponsored event.
The Moultrie County Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) was recognized during National Volunteer Week. The group has 154 members helping with health welfare and civic programs throughout the county. Bev Puleo, part of the pencil pal program at Powers School, is pictured reading to Matt Kracht.
In 1992 Bob Best wrote in BB’s about a state legislative proposal to provide school districts with $4000 per student. BB speculated, ”should the state become the primary provider of school funds, I envision requirements for minimum curriculum standards along with optimal class sizes, more fiscal overviews and generally more loss of local control.”
Sullivan sisters Sydnee Lee and Lindsay Ann Ray earned Little Miss of America titles. They are daughters of Chris and Cheryl Ray of Sullivan. The pageant was held in Springfield.
Lovington Panther Ben Ward rounds third and slides safely into home on a Heath Wilson single in a 10 inning game that found Tuscola on top by one run.
Sullivan sophomore pitcher Jason Wildman hurled a no-hitter while Shannon Risley and Andy Wagner hit home runs in a 16-0 win over Arcola.
Home runs by Ben Osman and Justin Ozee helped Bethany get its first win of the season with a 10-9 victory over Stonington.
50 Years Ago This Week
Lovington students Craig Fleener, Larry Wood and Dave Jackson have been chosen as delegates to Boys’ State. Cheryl Albert, also of Lovington, was selected to attend Girls’ State in June.
Ernie Harper, George Morford, Paul Mossman, Dennis Ozier and Robert Pierce have been elected to the Board of Directors of the Sullivan Chamber of Commerce.
During a special meeting of the Sullivan School Board Bob Calvin was named athletic director and basketball coach.
Sharon L. Bennett of Bethany was among students earning academic honors during the winter quarter at Eastern Illinois University.
Clara Trainor of Lovington celebrated her 90th birthday in the home of her son Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Trainor. Trainor, born in Kansas, came to Illinois in a covered wagon when she was four years old.
Parents may buy their graduating senior a 1965 Pontiac Grand Prix for $2645 at Stubblefield, Inc. in Sullivan.
The last week in April has been designated by Gov. Kerner as Clean-Up Week throughout the state. 4-H members and their leaders kicked off the week by working at the 4-H center.
Martha Sue Davis of Gays and Martin Elzy of Sullivan, who have made “straight As” in regular course work at EIU, will be honored at a recognition dinner at the university.
Finalists in the Coles-Moultrie Coop essay contest include Bill Standerfer and Janet Rhodes, both of Sullivan, and Cheryl Albert of Lovington.
Private Max Fultz, 24, son of Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Fultz of Sullivan, has completed eight weeks of military police training at Ft. Gordon, Ga.
