Dorothy Phillips retired from Scott State Bank after 31 years in the banking business. She began her career at Mattoon at First National Bank in bookkeeping. Five years after, she found an opening in Bethany where she lived with her husband, Boyd. After her retirement, Dorothy plans to return to Mattoon where four of her six children live.
Sullivan school board has reassigned Nancy Schaljo to the position of principal at Sullivan Middle School after the resignation of Kirby Rodgers. Teacher Rita Florey will now become the principal of Sullivan Elementary School. Some 21 teachers will be joining Sullivan’s staff of about 75 this school year.
A survey of Sullivan school district residents was running 60 percent in favor of consolidation with the Bethany School district. Some 63 percent preferred that Bethany High School students attend high school in Sullivan and each district house their own K-8.
Sullivan’s Frank Hutchcraft celebrates nearly three decades with the local auto dealership now owned by George Rutledge. The original owner, Tom West, sold the dealership to Dutch Horton in 1962. Horton sold to Wilbur Donnell in 1978. George Rutledge took over in 1992, and Frank is his sales manager. Hired by Horton as a parts manager, Hutchcraft became the glue that held the place together according to his son Michael.
