A promissory note written by Abraham Lincoln was discovered in the Moultrie County Courthouse by researcher William D. Beard for The Lincoln Legal Papers, a state research project on Lincoln’s 25 years in law practice. A group of jurors got to examine the note dated May 28, 1851 which indicated county residents H. C. Carney and Joseph Clark owed Lincoln a total of $50 within five months. One $20 payment was made in Nov. 1851 and another $20 in June 1852 with no final payment recorded.
The mayor of Findlay Ohio, the namesake for Findlay, Illinois, spoke during the village’s 100 Years of Pride celebration. Train rides, a medicine show, carriage rides and street singers were featured during the three day centennial observation.
