The huge mammoths and later the bison “remembered how to go” in Illinois. Their feet made the well-worn trail that led from Big-Bone Lick near Louisville, Kentucky (where they spent the winter), across southern Indiana, and into Illinois, following roughly US route #50. Called the Buffalo Trace, it was the chief route for pioneer immigration from Kentucky and the Carolinas. It was wide enough to accommodate the width of three wagonloads of settlers and their belongings.
