Sullivan baseball team’s trip to the Tuscola Showcase let the Redskins showcase some talent.

Sullivan came away April 8 with a big 11-1 win over Danville Schlarman and followed up Saturday evening with an 8-4 win over Salt Fork.

Dylan Liddiard pitched the five inning game for the Redskins, giving up four hits, throwing 39 of 65 strikes with eight strikeouts. Liddiard gave up one run and four walks in the game.

Depmatt and Rongy split pitching duties for the Hilltoppers. Depmatt gave up nine runs on four hits in 2.1 innings while getting three strikeouts. Rongy pitched 1.2 innings giving up two hits and two runs.

Alec Ballinger and Zach Hrvol scored home runs in the game.

Ballinger had two hits, scoring three runs with one RBI. Hrvol got a hit, two RBIs and scored twice.

Seventh Inning Runs Bring Win Home for Redskins

Sullivan’s 9-3 win over St. Teresa Thursday came with a blast of runs during the seventh inning.

“A lead off walk followed by a great bunt Blake Stewart turned into a hit,” coach Troy Rogers said started the six-run seventh inning.

“Then a ground ball by Ballinger, followed by Tuttle putting one in a perfect spot to prevent a play and score a run,” Rogers continued.

Zach Hrvol walked, then Bryce Farris lined a single to score two.

“We just finally put a good inning together,” he said.

It was a battle of pitchers for most of the game on the Bulldog’s diamond with Tom Schibur holding St. Teresa to three in five innings. Schibur had six strikeouts, allowing three base on balls  and three hits.

Okaw Valley Softball Tallies 20 Runs in Home Win

Grace Harlin’s first varsity start of the year was pretty remarkable.

The Okaw Valley sophomore scattered four walks, four hits, and four strikeouts over five innings to earn the 20-0 shutout against Martinsville.

Freshman Madison Vogel’s bases loaded triple in the first inning started the merry-go-round for most runs scored by OVs 2016 squad.

Head coach Dave Benning praised the team effort after the win, “It was good to get a lot of kids in the lineup today contributing. I am very proud of the team not taking Martinsville lightly. Regardless of the score, not giving up on plays is a good quality to have for a young ball club.”

Harlin surrendered back to back singles in the top of the first before a changeup buckled the knees of Martinsville’s three hitter. The strikeout seemed to settle nerves as Harlin recorded back to back pop outs to exit the jam unscathed. Coach Benning complemented Harlin for clutch pitches in big spots after the win. “In the first inning all of a sudden we are first and second nobody out. Sullivan Holds Meridian to One Run for a Big Win

Sullivan Redskin varsity baseball traveled to Meridian to get a 10-1 win April 5.

Zach Hrvol pitched six shutout innings for Sullivan, allowing two hits and a base on balls. Brett Tuttle came in for one inning of relief with the Hawks getting two hits and one run.

Hrvol got the win, throwing 52 strikes in 81 pitches; Tuttle threw 14 strikes in 19 pitches.

Alec Ballinger got two hits in four trips to the plate and scored twice; Brett Tuttle had three hits off five at bats scoring twice and driving in three RBIs.

Hrvol helped his cause with one hit, one run and a base on balls in four at bats. Bryce Farris had five trips to the plate, getting two hits, a run and one RBI. Read More

Okaw Valley Timberwolves 9-3 Over Lions

The Okaw Valley baseball team enjoyed a 9-3 win over Decatur LSA  April 8.

The Timberwolves opened the first inning 2-0 over the Lions, who scored one in the second.

Lutheran Schools Association’s Lions scored one in the third and one run in the sixth on eight hits.

SOV Track Finishes Third

The SOV boys’ track team finished in third place out of 13 teams in the cold, snowy, and windy Arthur Invitational Friday night.

Individuals earning points at the meet were:

Blake Stewart: first in the 200m 23.75, second in the 100m 11.7

Zane Uphoff: second in the 200m 24.1, second in long jump 19’6.5”, third in triple jump 39’6”

Timberwolves Beat Clinton Maroons

Okaw Valley Timberwolves varsity traveled to Clinton, April 2 beating the Clinton Maroons 5-2.

The Timberwolves started out the first inning with a 2-1 advantage over Clinton. Both teams scored in the third with Okaw Valley returning in the fifth and seventh innings with runs.

The Timberwolves maximized their hits scoring five from seven, while the Maroons had six hits that netted two runs.

Blue Devils Take Knights

Villa Grove Heritage Blue Devils took Arthur-Lovington/Atwood-Hammond Knights baseball 20-4 in a home game, April 4.

The Knights scored two runs to the Blue Devils three in the first inning. ALAH had a 2-2 fifth inning, then Villa Grove had a five run third and an eight run seventh, taking the game out of reach.
