Sullivan Blue Dolphins Give to VA Hospital

Each year the Blue Dolphin swim team takes a break from the water to give back to the community.

This year they chose to give to the veterans hospitalized at VA in Danville.

One hundred seventy-six toothbrushes, 115 denture cleaners, 45 bottles of shampoo, 45 bath towels, 19 toasters and 15 coffee pots are just some of the 818 items the Sullivan Blue Dolphins collected which were delivered to the hospital Feb. 2.

Head coach Jason Drury each year does something with the swimmers for the community and soldiers/veterans. He has a strong belief in teaching them to give back to the community they live in.

This year Samantha Berner of the American Legion provided Drury with a list of needs for the VA hospital. The team set out with a challenge to collect the items as a means to knock laps off their practice Saturday, January 23.

Senior Night Win for Okaw Valley

It was senior night in Bethany with the Okaw Valley Timberwolves winning over Decatur LSA 50-29.

Honored seniors include guard Gretchen Macklin and forward Devan Nave.

Okaw Valley started strong with a 14-8 first quarter. The Timberwolves continued the pace with a 16-9 second quarter, putting the Okaw Valley girls’ team ahead 30-17 at the half.

LSA’s Lions scored eight points to Okaw Valley’s 12 in the third. In the fourth quarter it was 8-4 Timberwolves for the 50-29 win.

Paige Robinson led the Timberwolves scoring, hitting eight field goals, a three point shot and three free throws for 22 points. Read More

Bombers Beat Knights

The Arthur-Lovington/Atwood-Hammond Knights met Argenta-Oreana in tournament play at Decatur LSA on January 26.

The Bombers came out on top 45-23

ALAH and Argenta-Oreana scored 7-8 first quarter. The second quarter found the Knights outscored 12-3, heading into the half time 20-10, Argenta-Oreana’s lead.

The Bombers had a strong 17-4 third quarter. ALAH scored 9-8 in the final quarter, leaving Argenta Oreana with the 45-23 win. Read More

Central A&M Takes Redskins in Senior Night Win

It was senior night for the Sullivan Redskins with Alyssa Marshall playing her final home game.

A game that ended with a 65-41 Central A&M Raider win.

“She has grown up over the past four years,” coach Sheri McCain said during the observance, which was attended by her parents Mike and Venessa. “It has been fun watching her be a part of this team. She plays with so much heart and determination, and that is something hard to teach.”

The first quarter ended with a 13-10 Central A&M advantage.

“We played a solid first quarter and were only down by three,” Coach McCain recalled. “A&M made their run in the second and shot our lights out.”

It was a tough second quarter as the Raiders turned the game their way with a 24-11 run that put them ahead 37-21 at the half. They came back with a 24-13 third quarter followed by a game calming 7-4 Sullivan advantage in the fourth quarter. Final score was 65-41 Central A&M. Read More

Okaw Valley Takes Knights in Close Game

The Okaw Valley girls traveled to Arthur winning 55-52 over the Knights, January 28.

The Timberwolves were able to keep the Knights’ Hannah Wallen and Megan Fifer in check, which put Mycaela Miller in the lead scoring position for Arthur-Lovington/Atwood-Hammond.

Paige Robinson, Jesse Robinson and Natalie Jeffers boosted Okaw Valley’s effort with double digit scoring.

During the first quarter Okaw Valley led 14-9. ALAH came up with a 12-6 second quarter to lead the Timberwolves 21-20 at the half.

A 14-13 third quarter sent the Knights into the fourth quarter with a 35-33 edge.

A 22-17 fourth quarter was fueled by Paige and Jesse Robinson for Okaw Valley pushing past the Knights by two points, 55-53.

Paige Robinson led the Timberwolves making five field goals and 9-11 free throws for 19 points.

ALAH Knights Bring Home a Win

The Arthur-Lovington/Atwood-Hammond Knights didn’t have a problem traveling to Decatur LSA and winning 51-40 February 1.

It was a 10-9 LSA Lion first quarter. By the second the Knights scored 13-10 for a 22-20 first half lead.

The third quarter was evenly paced with an eight point tie. The Knights came alive in the fourth quarter outscoring LSA 21-12 for the 51-40 win.

Hannah Wallen led the Knight effort, supplying three three’s, four field goals and three free shots for 20 points. Read More

Redskins Take Cardinals at CIC Tournament

Sullivan’s Redskins went into the CIC Tournament in Moweaqua as a seven seed and emerged as the number five team.

And it was accomplished with a 37-24 win over the Warrensburg Latham Cardinals, January 25.

“This was one of our best defensive games,” coach Sheri McCain said. “We held them to single digits in three quarters, including holding them to two points in the second quarter.”

Warrensburg had beaten the Redskins by three points earlier in the season.

“I’m glad the girls came out ready to play tonight,” she said of the effort.

The first quarter was the Cardinals best; scoring 13-8 over Sullivan. Redbird defense went in gear with a 12-2 second quarter advantage for Sullivan, as they headed into the half leading Warrensburg 20-15. Read More

Arcola Takes LOVC Tournament Championship

Arcola took Cumberland 66-52 to win the LOVC girls’ basketball championship January 30 in Arthur.

The Purple Riders had a strong first quarter lead over the Pirates 18-7. The second quarter was dominated by the Arcola team 14-8 placing them ahead of Cumberland 32-15 at the half.

Cumberland’s Pirates scored 15 in the third to the Riders 19 and matched Arcola in the final 15-15, with Cumberland winning 66-52. Read More

St. Teresa Outlasts Sullivan in Physical CIC Tourney Opener

The Bulldogs were able to grind out a hard fought 43-36 win behind Isaiah Bond’s fourth quarter heroics. Sullivan rallied from a 10 point deficit in the first quarter and stayed within striking distance thanks to the strong play of Zach Hrvol who finished with 18 points.

Sullivan head coach Chet Reeder said the game plan didn’t change heading into the rematch. “They hit a lot of jumpers, and that was still the game plan. Our defensive intensity was pretty good; they just made some heavily contested shots.”

St. Teresa opened the contest with back to back three pointers taking a 6-0 lead just over a minute in.

Ty Molzen got the Redskins on the scoreboard at the six minute mark. The Bulldogs countered with three straight baskets to make a 12-2 game with three minutes left in the first period of play.

Hrvol looked confident all game and made it a 12-6 game on consecutive layups. Alec Ballinger then gave Sullivan all the momentum taking a loose ball coast to coast scoring at the buzzer to cut the Bulldog lead to 14-8.

Hrvol keep the run alive going high above the rim on an alley-oop inbounds play to make it a two point game 14-12 with five minutes left in the half. Read More

LSA Over Knights in LOVC Tourney Action

In LOVC Tournament action January 29 Decatur Lutheran Association Lions won 38-27 over the Arthur-Lovington/Atwood-Hammond Knights.

Controlling the defensive backboards with 22 rebounds and hitting a better percentage of field goals at 36 wasn’t enough to guide the Knights past the Lions.

LSA hit 16 percent of their three point shots and 57 percent of their free throws, along with making 14 points from turnovers to give the Lions an edge.

ALAH started the first quarter with a 13-9 advantage. A cool shooting Knight second quarter pushed the Lions 8-2 effort to a 17-15 halftime lead. Third quarter went 12-6 for LSA, and they scored 9-6 in the fourth for the 38-27 Lion win. Read More
