ALAH Knights Hold Sangamon Valley Down for a Win

Arthur-Lovington/Atwood-Hammond Knights held Sangamon Valley at bay January 23 with a 49-38 win in LOVC action.

The Knights were 44 percent from the field with 16-36 while the Storm shot 14-45 for 31 percent.

ALAH made one three point shot to Sangamon Valley’s 0. On the free throw line ALAH hit 16-22 for 72 percent against he Storm’s 11-15 for 73 percent.

Sangamon Valley started the first quarter 12-8 ahead of the ALAH team. By the second quarter they tied 10-10 with the Storm heading into the half ahead 22-18. Knights Hold Off Titans for the Win

The Arthur-Lovington/Atwood-Hammond Knights held off the Tri-County Shiloh Titans for a 54-51 win January 23.

The Titans were up 16-14 at the end of the first quarter. A 22-6 second quarter let Tri-Co Shiloh go into the half trailing the Knights 28-22.

The Titans came from the half with a 11-9 third quarter while the Knights still led. Tri-Co put a 20-15 effort over ALAH in the fourth with the Knights remaining on top 54-51.

Hannah Wallen scored 19 points, hitting 4-5 from the free throw line, six field goals and one three point shot. Read More

Arthur-Lovington/Atwood-Hammond faced down Okaw Valley in a 59-37 win January 21 at Arthur.

The Knights took a 13-8 first quarter advantage over the Timberwolves followed by a 16-9 second quarter that put the ALAH girls’ team up 29-17 at the half.

Okaw Valley came out with a 11-10 third quarter but lost momentum with a 20-9 fourth quarter, resulting in the 59-37 Knight win.

Hannah Wallen led the Knight scoring with 23, hitting seven field goals and a perfect 9-9 from the free throw line.

Megan Fifer hit a three point shot and five from the field for 13 points.

Liz Shipman came up with 11 points, hitting one three point shot and four field goals.

Payton Wellbaum scored six points with two field goals and two free shots; Mycaela Miller hit two field goals for four points, with Janette Comstock getting  two points from 2-2 trips for free throws. Read More

ALAH Downed by Central A&M

Arthur-Lovington/Atwood-Hammond’s Knights lost 53-39 to the Central A&M Raiders January 12.

ALAH and Central A&M finished the first quarter 10-11 with the Raiders advantage. During the second Central scored 15-8, going in to the half leading 26-18.

In the third quarter the Raiders outscored the Knights 19-13 with ALAH coming back in the fourth 8-8, leaving the final score 53-39.

Marcus Vanausdoll led Knights scoring, hitting 5-7 field goals and one free throw for 11 points, while pulling down five rebounds, grabbing one steal and giving one assist.  Read More

One hundred Taekwondo students and instructors from throughout Illinois, gathered in Mattoon for the year end Test Promotion December 12.

Okaw Valley girls beat Arcola 42-30 in LOVC tournament action in Arthur January 18.

The Timberwolves were up 10-6 at the end of the first quarter. The Purple Riders came back with a 5-3 second quarter, putting the Okaw Valley team up 13-11 at the half.

During the third quarter Okaw Valley scored 12 to Arcola’s eight points. Up 25-21 at the end of three, the Timberwolves finished with a 17-10 fourth quarter for the 42-30 win.

Paige Robinson led the Timberwolves in scoring with six field goals, while hitting 5-6 free throws for 17 points.

Chloe Weybright hit one three point shot, three field goals and was 3-4 from the free stripe for 12 points.

Natalie Jeffers hit two field goals and one free shot for five points; Hope Ruppert made two field goals for four points; Jesse Robinson made one field goal, and Brianna Creviston scored a field goal to complete Okaw Valley scoring. Read More

Sullivan Falls to Undefeated Warrensburg

Ty Molzen scored the first seven points for the Redskins versus the 16-0 Cardinals.  However, a slow start teamwise proved too much to overcome in a 58-37 loss.

Tyler Bond and Garret Shea led the Cardinals with 24 and 17 points respectively for the second ranked team in Illinois Class 2A.  With 13 points scored against Warrensburg Ty Molzen is 34 away from 1,000 career points.

The Redskins have dropped their first two conference contests but have back to back home games on deck. Be sure to pack the gym Friday versus Meridian to cheer #21 in his pursuit of legend status.

The Cardinals struggled early with the athleticism of the Redskins defense taking almost four minutes to score. Once the seal was broken the Cardinals scored the next 11 points. Trailing 13-0 the Redskins managed a basket from Molzen with just 33 seconds left in the first quarter. The Cardinals continued to roll in the second quarter and extended the lead to 18-4 before Sullivan began close the gap.

Molzen hit a clutch three pointer at the 6:30 mark to bring the score to 18-7.  Alec Ballinger added a free throw on the Redskins next possession to get within 10 points of the lead at 18-8. The Cardinals answered with a fast break resulting in highlight flush by Weston Nottelmann.   Read More

Hard Fought But Not Enough for Sullivan Girls

Sometimes missing a player affects the whole team, which may have been part of the reason for Sullivan girls to lose 52-34 at St. Teresa January 14.

Coach Sheri McCain said sophomore guard Lizzie Green was out due to illness. “I thought Brooke Tuttle stepped up in her absence and handled the ball well.”

Tuttle provided the team with three assists.

“Chloe Riley played well offensively in both the JV and varsity games,” McCain said. Junior varsity Redskins beat St Teresa 36-26.

In the varsity game Riley had three steals, four field goals and two free shots for 10 points. Alyssa Marshall provided three three point goals for nine points; Tatum Ellis had three field goals and one free shot for seven points. Read More

ALAH girls basketball won 59-35 over the Cerro Gordo Broncos in a home game January 14.

The Knights came out with a 15-11 lead in the first quarter. A couple of three point shots from Hannah Wallen boosted the second quarter to 17-5, with the Knights heading into halftime ahead 32-16. ALAH maintained their momentum in the third quarter leading 11-10. They polished off the Broncos with a 16-9 final quarter and a 59-35 Knights win.

Megan Fifer had an outstanding night at the free throw line scoring 10-12 along with three field goals for 16 points.

Hannah Wallen hit three three point shots and three from the field for 15 points; Liz Shipman had a strong fourth quarter scoring three of her four field goals on the night for eight points.  Read More

Charleston Hands Sullivan Girls a Loss

The trip to Charleston found Sullivan’s girls’ basketball team faced with a 75-27 loss.

“Charleston is a very disciplined and fundamental team,” coach Sheri McCain said of the game, noting that turning the ball over 32 times told the tale of the Redskin loss.

Charleston started the first quarter 16-2 over the Redskins. The 22-12 second quarter put the Trojans ahead 38-14 at the half. Charleston scored 21 to Sullivan’s nine points in the third quarter and 16-4 in the fourth for the 75-27 win. Read More
