Lady Knights Score Home Win Over Cumberland

The ALAH Lady Knights’ 57-24 win over Cumberland Dec. 3 was  accomplished the old-fashioned way: two-pointers and good defense.

The Arthur-Lovington/Atwood-Hammond team held the Lady Pirates to three points in the first quarter while the Lady Knights went on a 19 point run.

ALAH added another 14 points in the second quarter, going into the half ahead 33-9.

Third quarter action found the Lady Knights adding 16 points while the Lady Pirates made seven points. An eight to eight fourth quarter led to the 57-24 final score.

Megan Fifer led Lady Knight scoring, hitting two field goals in the first quarter, three in the second and two in the third for 14 points.

Hannah Wallen had a big first quarter with three field goals, followed by two in the second and four in the third quarter for 12 points.

Janette Comstock hit two field goals in the first quarter and one each in the second and third quarter for eight points. Logan Kauffman hit a couple of field goals in the second quarter and made a free throw for five points. Read More

Sullivan Okaw Valley football Redskin Alec Ballinger was selected for Honorable Mention on the All State Illinois High School Coaches Association team for 2015

In addition he was selected to the News Gazette First team, All Area Championship as the punter.

Ballinger was all conference the previous year proving a valuable wide receiver and punter for the Redskin football team.

“He is an outstanding athlete, a great kid and a joy to coach,” said Redskin head football coach Gerald Temples.

Temples explained that the Redskin team success is testimony to a bunch of hard working players during the season.

“We had a good team, Alec has the athletic ability and the competitive intensity that deserves this recognition,” the coach concluded.

Okaw Valley Timberwolves won 50-40 over the Shelbyville Rams Dec. 4.

Leading the Okaw Valley team scoring was Connor Cloyd. The 6’3” junior had eight field goals and one free throw for 17 points. He pulled down eight rebounds and had a steal.

Senior forward Drew Fruchtl had two field goals, shot five for five free throws for nine points while adding ten rebounds for the night. Dylan Park, the 6’3” senior guard, scored three field goals and one three pointer for eight points, while getting three rebounds, three assists and a steal.

The Comets Fly By Knights

Arthur-Lovington/Atwood-Hammond varsity basketball traveled to Strasburg December 1 with the Stew-Stras team winning 41-26.

The Knights first quarter kept pace with the Comets 7-9. In the second the Comets outscored ALAH 14-3, going into the half ahead 23-10.

A 10-5 third quarter put the Stew-Stras team safely in the lead in spite of a 11-8 final quarter run by the Knights.

ALAH made 10 of 29 shots from the field for 34 percent; two of six three point shots for 33 percent and four of nine free throws for 44 percent shooting averages. Read More

Lake Shelbyville Water Control Operations/Dam Safety Public Meeting

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will host a meeting with the public to discuss the current Water Control Plan, the 2015 Water Control Operations and Dam Safety at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, December 10.

Presentations will be given on water control operations/procedures and dam safety by members of the St. Louis District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers staff.  The staff will host a questions and answers session regarding operations and dam safety after the presentations.  Read More

Redskins Lose at Effingham St. Anthony

Sullivan’s Redskin basketball team traveled to St. Anthony in Effingham Dec 1 with the home team winning 52-39.

It was even at the end of the first quarter with Sullivan and St. Anthony each with 11 points on the scoreboard.

A  seven to five point run by the Bulldogs in the second quarter put St. Anthony ahead 18-16 at the half.

The third quarter was golden for the Bulldogs as they scored 23 points to the Redskins seven. In the fourth Sullivan came back around with a 16-10 run but came up short on the total. Read More

Strong First Half Not Enough for Lady Reds

Sullivan’s Lady Redskins made a strong showing in the first half at Tuscola Dec. 3 but lost momentum and the game 39-32.

“I thought we played a solid first half defensively,” coach Sheri McCain began. “We held them to 14 points.

Tuscola outscored Sullivan 10-7 in the first quarter, but the Lady Redskins held the Lady Warriors to four points in the second quarter. Sullivan went into the half ahead 15-14.

“The only really major thing I think we didn’t do well was take care of the ball, especially in the second half,” she continued. “We had too many forced turn overs.”

Coach McCain pointed out that Brooke Tuttle stepped up with eight steals for the Lady Redskins as well as hitting three field goals for six points. Read More

A Good Night for the Lady Knights

It was a good night for the Lady Knights who beat Oakwood 55-41 on their home court November 30 .

The first two quarters found the teams evenly matched with each scoring ten, sending the game into the half tied 20-20.

Arthur Lovington Atwood Hammond scored 23 points in the third quarter to six points for Oakwood as the the Lady Knight defense pressure increased. By the end of the third it was 43-26 ALAH. Read More

Redskins Open Season with Road Win

Sullivan boys’ basketball team traveled to Arthur Nov 24 winning 48-32 over the Knights.

The Redskins led off the first quarter 15-9, scoring 8-9 in the second quarter to head into the half ahead 24-17.

Sullivan outscored the Knights again in the third 10-4 and 14-11 in the fourth for the 48-32 total.

Sullivan shot 50 percent from the field hitting 20-40. They made 5-7 three point shots for 29 percent and the Redskins were 3-9 from the free stripe for 33 percent.

The Arthur Lovington Atwood Hammond team hit 15-31 shots for 48 percent from the field and hit 2-8 from the free throw line for 25 percent.

The Redskins and Knights were evenly matched on rebounds. Sullivan had seven offensive and 11 defensive rebounds for 18.

The Knights edged by with 19 total rebounds, pulling down seven offensive and 12 from the defensive boards. Read More

Lady Braves Take Sullivan at Home

Sullivan Lady Redskins met a tough Mt. Zion Lady Braves team at home November 30.

Mt. Zion won 50-37 over the Sullivan team.

Coach Sheri McCain pointed out the rebounding will have to improve.

“I do know the ones who start taking pride in rebounding will be our varsity starters,” Coach McCain said.

Lizzie Green was the leading rebounder with seven. She also contributed five field goals for 10 points. Green had two steals and led with assists at seven.

“Every time we did something well offensively, we would turn around and make mistakes defensively,” McCain continued noting the youth of the team showed. Read More

On Route 133 between Lovington and Arthur, power poles fell as a result of the storm systems that hit central Illinois in two waves on Wednesday, June 17th. These storms left many without power and caused widespread damage throughout the area, including confirmed tornado touchdowns in nearby counties.
