Even despite picking up extra points in both the 300m hurdles and the pole vault, the SOV girls’ track team fell behind Neoga and Central A&M to take third in Tuesday’s bi-county meet.

Redskins Blow Six-Run Second Inning Lead to Charleston, Fall 15-11

Sixth inning letdown spells loss for Sullivan

by Kirk Whitaker
Arthur/Sullivan Reporter

“Walks killed us today, and it was our entire pitching staff, not just one player,” Redskins baseball head coach Troy Rogers said. “Anytime you walk a batter, that person tends to score, especially leadoff walks or one-out walks. We had limited that as a staff pretty well lately, but not today, and that gave them their big inning.”

The inning alluded to—the top of the sixth—in Sullivan’s non-conference matchup against Charleston was not just big, it sealed the game. Read More

No. 1 & 3 hitters combine for six hits, five runs

by Keith Stewart
keith@newsprogress.com=

In just three at-bats, senior leadoff Colton Sroka and no. 3 Peyton Hagerman combined to produce half of Okaw Valley’s 12 hits on the day against Arcola.

“Colton Sroka set the stage by hitting the ball off the wall at his first at bat. Peyton and him then just hit line-drive after line-drive throughout the day,” said OV coach Andrew Hagerman. “Then there were some other guys in the order. Ian (Tiarks) had a nice hit. Taylor Coleman stepped up with a nice hit late in the game as a freshman. Devon (Still) had three hits himself. But Sroka and Hagerman really launched the baseball today.” Read More

Final inning nearly provides comeback for Raiders

by Kirk Whitaker
Arthur/Sullivan Reporter

Pitching has been pretty good recently for the Redskins baseball team.
Saturday Nick Frerichs two-hit Danville Schlarman en route to a 14-0 win, and Tuesday Shane Atchison returned the favor with a complete game two-hit gem of his own against Central A&M, striking out nine and walking three along with the two hits.
“Shane has been solid all season,” Redskins head coach Troy Rogers said. “He knows how to pitch, he’s a bulldog on the mound—he’s out there with no sleeves because he’s crazy—he worked ahead in the count with a relatively small and low strike zone. In the last inning specifically he kept his composure and finished exceptionally well.” Read More

Lady Wolves out strong but can’t sustain

by Kirk Whitaker
Arthur/Sullivan Reporter

It’s not often that in one inning with one hit, a team can score five runs. But that’s exactly what happened last Wednesday in Arthur as Okaw Valley’s softball team stumbled with two errors to let Arthur-Lovington/Atwood-Hammond take a lead they wouldn’t give up.

“If you take away the one inning where we gave Arthur-Lovington five runs off one hit and two errors, we played them well,” said OV head coach Dave Benning. “You can’t give a team five runs in an inning, especially a good team like Arthur-Lovington. We were outplayed defensively in two innings, and that is what cost us.” Read More

by Keith Stewart
keith@newsprogress.com

With more than 10 area teams for both boys and girls, the annual Arthur Invite last Wednesday saw SOV’s girls take second place, while the host’s two groups finished in closely contested top five spots.

McClain Can’t Complain

Amanda McClain didn’t just walk away with three first place individual medals Wednesday evening. She also took with her two new meet records, breaking teammate Emily Neuhauser’s 2012 200m dash record of 26.40 by running a 26.21 and then doing her own 2012 400m dash record (1:00) a few seconds better, running 57.94. Errors compound for Sullivan defense

by Kirk Whitaker
Arthur/Sullivan Reporter

It looked so good so quickly.

Then in the blink of an eye, it was gone.

It was night and day for the Lady Redskins softball team in the 20 minute time span that was the home half of the fourth and visiting half of the fifth inning Saturday afternoon against Windsor/Stew-Stras. Read More

On Route 133 between Lovington and Arthur, power poles fell as a result of the storm systems that hit central Illinois in two waves on Wednesday, June 17th. These storms left many without power and caused widespread damage throughout the area, including confirmed tornado touchdowns in nearby counties.
