The Okaw Valley Timberwolves volleyball team lost in a conference matchup on Tuesday to the Bement Bulldogs in a 25-19; 17-25; 21-25 match.

The Lady T-Wolves started out ahead in the first game by executing their plays well despite a few rotation and miscommunication errors. After an OV timeout, Bement began to gain momentum and the two teams battled back and forth. But OV made some more strong plays to cause Bement to trail as they made their way to a win, taking the game 25-19. Read More

SOV Hosts Real Men Wear Pink Game

Sullivan Okaw-Valley will be supporting breast cancer awareness during its varsity football game at 7 p.m. Friday. 

Football players and supporters will wear pink at the game in order to encourage their mothers, aunts, grandmothers, and other female friends and family members to get biennial mammograms once they reach the age of 50. SOV is supporting the cause in other ways as well: “Paint the Stands Pink” for Friday night’s varsity football game. Survivors, family members or anyone who knows someone who has been touched by breast cancer, should unite in the end zone by 6:45 to form a “Pink Tunnel” through which the varsity boys may run as they take to the field. There will also be donation buckets and pink items at the entrance of the game.

This is the seventh year for Real Men Wear Pink, a breast cancer awareness campaign carried out by St. Mary’s Hospital. Men, as well as women, are encouraged to wear pink each Friday during the month of October.

Maroa-Forsyth's quarterback Jack Hockaday demonstrated Friday night that he doesn't have to be on offense to score.

The junior who helped lead the trojans to a class 2A state title last year as a sophomore, recorded 77 yards rushing, including two touchdowns and 239 yards passing, responsible for another two scores, but then had an interception and run back for the Trojan's final points Friday in the third quarter. Lancers Sweep Own Tournament to Improve to 8-0

Third straight accomplishment for Cornwell and company

For the third straight year the Arthur-Lovington Lancers swept their home tournament, defeating Deland-Weldon, Cowden-Herrick, Villa Grove, and Atwood-Hammond.

The Lancers exhibited dominance at times throughout the day but weakness at others.

The biggest challenge for the Lancers came in the 8 a.m. opener against Deland-Weldon, who incidentally forgot some jerseys and had to wear the Lancers’ basketball uniforms to play.  Read More

Lancers prevail with second and third match wins

The rivalry between Sullivan and Arthur-Lovington has proved to be a hotly contested matchup in whatever sport the two schools face off in the last few years, and yesterday, in volleyball, that didn’t change.

The Lady Redskins came out white hot in the first set, getting on top of Arthur-Lovington ending the first set on a 10-1 run.

“We struggled with the ball on our side,” said Lancers head coach Val Cornwell. “We talked about passing and serves—which wasn’t very good at all—because we were being forced to go only outside so we couldn’t do much.” Read More

In their first home match of the season, the Okaw Valley golf team welcomed Meridian and Sullivan to the National at Eagle Creek in Findlay Tuesday evening and under much cooler conditions than what the beginning of the season had in store.

Nicer weather aside, however, the Timberwolves finished with a combined 192, behind first place Meridian, who finished with a 179. Sullivan finished third with 205.

Devon Still was OV’s leader, shooting 44 after nine holes. He was followed by Jay Orris’ 45, Colton Sroka’s 46, Justin Johnson’s 57, and a 61 by both Logan Tipsword and Drew Fruchtl.

“We didn’t play as well tonight, but we still had a couple of very good rounds,” said OV head coach Andy Wagner. “ I was very pleased with the way our players carried themselves this evening and looking forward to seeing us continue to get better over the next couple of weeks.  We will have a good test for our players coming up with the Mt. Zion Invitational on Friday and the Windsor Invitational on Saturday.” Read More

Weak tackling exploited by Dee and Isbell

It was virtually all running from the start. For one team, it worked, but for the other, not so much.

For Cerro Gordo-Bement, running back Steve Isbell amassed more than 200 yards while fullback Dee Woods rumbled long and hard for the Broncos and went over the century mark. Tale of Two Sets Still in Favor of Lancers

In the first set, Okaw Valley came out scrappy and played well for the most part against Arthur- Lovington. Small school in a big pond, SOV teams finish 9th and 11th

In one of the largest invitationals of the year, SOV saw three individuals medal, while the boys team finished 11th and the girls 9th.

"I was pleased with the performance," said head coach Ted Walk. "When we are competing with schools three to five times our size, we use it as an opportunity to adjust to the pacing of an invitational. When over 200 people are crammed in at a starting line, adrenaline is running high and athletes tend to go out too fast."

The boys were up first, beginning at 9 a.m. Saturday at Eastern Illinois University's Panther Trail.  Read More
