Weak tackling exploited by Dee and Isbell

It was virtually all running from the start. For one team, it worked, but for the other, not so much.
For Cerro Gordo-Bement, running back Steve Isbell amassed more than 200 yards while fullback Dee Woods rumbled long and hard for the Broncos and went over the century mark. The vaunted Bronco rushing attack played keep away from the Knights’ offense which put up 99 points in their first two contests. Read More
Tale of Two Sets Still in Favor of Lancers

The game was a story of two sets, one close, one not so much.
In the first set, Okaw Valley came out scrappy and played well for the most part against Arthur- Lovington. The Lady Timberwolves gave the Lancers all they could handle in the opening of the first set, holding leads multiple times early on before the Lancers came together and pulled away for the first set victory 25-16. Small school in a big pond, SOV teams finish 9th and 11th

In one of the largest invitationals of the year, SOV saw three individuals medal, while the boys team finished 11th and the girls 9th.
"I was pleased with the performance," said head coach Ted Walk. "When we are competing with schools three to five times our size, we use it as an opportunity to adjust to the pacing of an invitational. When over 200 people are crammed in at a starting line, adrenaline is running high and athletes tend to go out too fast."
The boys were up first, beginning at 9 a.m. Saturday at Eastern Illinois University's Panther Trail. Read More

Run game produces, but O-line loses yet another

Do you want the good news or the bad news first?
SOV’s home opener was in fact marked with the “W” this past Friday, as they defeated Meridian 14-8, evening up their record at 1-1.
As for the bad?
SOV lost yet another offensive/defensive lineman, their third of the year as well as their fourth senior in Brock Cook, who went down on Meridian’s first drive of the game, with an apparent knee injury and would later be taken to the hospital. Read More

LOVC title implications this week as Broncos loom

The first two weeks of football have been eventful to say the least for the Arthur-Lovington/Atwood-Hammond Knights.
But here’s some food for thought: two games; 99 points; two opening kickoffs taken back to the house; two games in which senior Jordan Faegin scored at least two touchdowns, and junior quarterback Tyler Schuring had over 150 yards of total offense; two games of running clock, JV-in-by-the-end-of-the-third-quarter-football.
You should get the picture by now.
The Knights drubbed Oakwood-Fithian/Armstrong-Potomac 40-7 last week, and the beat down started early and continued often throughout the game.
As at Hoopston the week before, the Knights received the kickoff and returned it for the opening score—this time senior wideout Curtis Plank was the beneficiary of the lanes set up by the AL-AH kickoff return team—and Schuring added the PAT for a 7-0 lead 13 seconds into the game.
With the home crowd in frenzy, Schuring kicked the ball away, and and the Knights kickoff team stormed down the field. Senior linebacker Logan West lit up the Oakwood returner at the 30 yard line. Read More
Solid passing leads to fluid attacks

If history were to predict anything last Thursday, it was that the Lancers would pull out their first LOVC victory with relative ease.
They didn’t disappoint.
AL won in straight sets, 25-6, 25-13, in Villa Grove Thursday behind five Aces and 13 assists from Sherelle Coller, five kills from Emily Seegmiller, and four kills from Karly Goodman.
“I thought our passing was better tonight than it has been before, and that helped us get a smoother offense going,” said head coach Val Cornwell.
The Lancers started off the first game hot, obtaining a 9-2 lead before consecutive points from Villa Grove. The Blue Devils tried to get back into the contest and brought the deficit to four at 10-6. The advantage was stretched to six and when the score was 12-6, Coller came to serve for the Lancers.

Poor showing Saturday all but erases strong start

After going 3-0 to start the season, the Sullivan volleyball team fell to 3-5 all in one day while competing at the 33rd Annual Mattoon Tournament this past Saturday.
All but one of their losses came in two set matches, with their final match against St. Elmo-Brownstown going to three sets. Sullivan won the first 25-22 but then fell in the next two sets 15-25, 12-15.
“I was pleasantly surprised to see our ‘refuse to lose’ attitude in the first two matches of the season especially, and I saw nothing of that attitude in our team as a whole in the tournament,” said head coach Heather Lindenmeyer.
Sullivan first faced Warrensburg-Latham but lost a close first set 25-23 followed by a 25-17 loss.
The Redskins next faced Heyworth, who had the same morning defeated host and reigning tournament champion Mattoon, in three sets. Read More
