Brett Poorman received the DAISY Award for Nursing Excellence at Decatur Memorial Hospital. Poorman, of Sullivan, is a three-time DAISY Award recipient. He was nominated to receive his most recent DAISY Award by a patient’s family member, hospital officials said.
In the nomination form, the patient’s daughter wrote, “Brett was a great comfort to me and my siblings when our father died [following serious illness]. Brett was with my dad, holding his hand, as he passed away peacefully. A registered clinical nurse in the intensive care unit at Decatur Memorial Hospital, Poorman has worked for four years at the nonprofit hospital. “Brett is a team player who helps the unit when we need extra hands,” said Amber Vest, director of Intensive and Intermediate Care at Decatur Memorial Hospital. “Brett provides his patients with safe, competent care and advocates not only for their needs, but also for the needs of his patients’ families.”
The nonprofit DAISY Foundation was established by the family of J. Patrick Barnes, who died from complications of an autoimmune disease. They were inspired to create the DAISY Award because of the care that nurses provided to Barnes and his family during his illness.
