Recent Obituaries: Dorothy Mae Kirkwood White

Dorothy Mae Kirkwood White, 73, of Decatur, passed away 5:57 p.m. on Monday, October 27, 2025, at Springfield Memorial Hospital. 

Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, November 4, 2025, at the McMullin-Young Funeral Home in Sullivan. Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, November 5, 2025, at the McMullin-Young Funeral Home in Sullivan. Burial will be in Marrowbone Township Cemetery, Bethany. Memorials may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital: 501 St. Jude Place Memphis, TN 38105 

Dorothy was born on May 15, 1952, in Linton, IN, the daughter of John Clifford Kirkwood and Alice Marie Nixon. She was a retired teacher from the Decatur Public School, where she worked for many years. Dorothy married Robert Terry White on March 25, 1972, in Bethany, at the Free Methodist Church (where they have been lifetime members) where they met and she was the Church Treasurer for many years. Dorothy traveled with her husband of 53 years to the many places that the army sent them for 21 years until they retired and returned to Illinois never to move again.

Dorothy was very happy being the mother of Dorian Elizabeth (Kevin) Howard, Dana Leann (Reggie) Brown and Jonathan Robert (Katie) White; but she really shined when her grandchildren began with Danielle Elizabeth (Skyler) Daum, Eilyjah JoVon Woods, Isaiah J (Kaleigh) Woods, Carmen Lee Howard, Tori Rae Howard, Beatrix Marie White, Margo Elizabeth White and Ailani Lenah Brown; and great-granddaughter, Nora Jane Daum. Dorothy is the guardian angel over all of her children, their spouses and grandchildren.

Dorothy and Terry spent the majority of their time supporting all of their grandchildren in the many sports, music and dance programs they were a part of. They knew that their “Grandparents” would always be there.

Dorothy is survived by her husband, children, grandchildren and siblings, Clifford Eugene (Mary) Kirkwood, Rose Fern (Martin) Willer, Anna Marie Poole and Daniel Wayne (Nitra) Kirkwood, Sr. she is also survived by many nephews and nieces.

She was preceded in death by her parents, brother, Charles Wayne Kirkwood and sister, Sarah Alice Thompson.

Trunk or Treat

On Saturday, October 18th, neither wind nor rain could deter Sullivan’s First United Methodist Church from holding their ‘Trunk or Treat’ event. With the weather uncooperative, the event was moved indoors where the festivities went on, and enjoyed by all.

4-H photography workshop

On Saturday, November 8th, from 10:00 a.m. to noon at the Moultrie-Douglas Extension Office, 304 E Progress Street, Arthur, a free photography workshop will be sponsored by 4-H and conducted by Allen Welch. Mr. Welch is a 4-H photography judge, studio owner, and Tuscola Vault Art Gallery board member. This event is open to youth ages eight to eighteen years. 4-H Arcola Public Library STEM workshop

This engaging, hands-on, after-school workshop series is open to children in grades 3 through 8. Lessons taught will be about force, motion, electrical currents, positive/negative charges, and everyone will be invited to use their ‘problem-solving hats’ to build projects. Participation is open to the public for this free workshop. All workshops will occur at the Arcola Public Library, 407 E Main Street, Arcola. There are only twelve registration slots open. Illinois sets new record for youth deer season harvest

Illinois youth deer hunters set a new record for the season, harvesting a preliminary total of 4,714 deer October 11th through 13th. Top harvest counties include Randolph, 259; Pike, 164; Adams, 155; Jefferson, 155; and Marion, 135. Comparatively, youth hunters took 4,097 deer during the season in 2024. 

Youth hunters with an unfilled, valid youth deer permit may still hunt with the permit during the upcoming firearm deer seasons, November 21st through 23rd and December 4th through 7th. This is the first year that unfilled youth permits are valid for both segments of the firearm season. Moultrie County numbers are as follows by year: 2025-30, 2024-36, 2023-28.

Sullivan Mayor proclaims October 27th ‘Agri-Fab Day’
