A Look Back…November 15, 2023

A storm, which was responsible for approximately 80 reports of tornadoes including those near the Altamont, Tuscola and Gifford areas left Moultrie County by comparison in relatively good shape. Nonetheless, parts of the county did suffer extensive damage from what is generally believed as straight line winds. At least three machine sheds housing farm equipment were severely damaged and a nearby radio tower was also downed. In Bethany, there were several reports of hail damage and in Findlay the village was without power. Between 15-20 power poles were either downed or damaged outside of Findlay due the storm. Flooding was also an issue in some areas including at Asa Creek Bridge in Sullivan where the sudden downpour spawned flash flooding.  Read More

City Council has First Reading of Levy and Assessment of Taxes

The Sullivan City Council had a first reading of the levy and assessment of taxes for the City of Sullivan during the Monday, November 13 meeting. The ordinance states that the total amount of appropriations for the tax levy is $51,369.350. The amount of 1,321,679 is levied upon all the taxable property in the City of Sullivan subject to taxation for the current fiscal year. This was simply the first reading of the ordinance which will be available for viewing at city building and will be up for a vote at the first meeting in December.

Rotary Makes Donation to Team IMPACT

Team IMPACT was founded as a collaboration between Darby Poe of the Moultrie County Counseling Center and Kali Taylor of SHS as a way to meet the needs of CUSD 300 students. Personal hygiene products, clothing, and miscellaneous items have been collected and donated by the community as a way of helping students achieve maximum success. Read More

2023 Veterans Day Art and Writing Contest Winners Announced

The Sullivan American Legion Auxiliary Unit #68 recently presented awards to several Sullivan students who competed in their 2023 Veterans Day Art and Writing Contest.

Junior Taylar Mercer won the 11th and 12th grade art division with her piece entitled “A Proud Veteran.” Her drawing combines two images of John James. According to her creator’s statement that, “He was an African-American World War II veteran who was denied an officer position for 76 years due to his race. After 36 years of retirement, he was recognized and rewarded his officer bars. He wore them with pride.”

Judges were particularly impressed by Mercer’s creativity in combining images of a young and older James in his uniform. One half of her drawing is based on a photo of him when he was younger and was denied becoming an officer because of his race. The other half is based on an image of him after he retired and was finally promoted. Read More

One Book One Sullivan Book Choice

Members of One Book One Sullivan read diligently all summer long, reading a book from the Rebecca Caudill book list each week. The group’s goal is to choose a book that would be enjoyable to readers of all ages in Sullivan and the surrounding communities. The students will announce their 2023-2024 community-wide book title on Tuesday, November 21st at 2:05 p.m. in the high school gymnasium. The students hope that the community will share the joy of books as much as they do. The following is a list of the top 4 selections:

LPC Football All Conference Teams

The Lincoln Prairie Conference has announce the football all-conference teams. First team-offensive lineman were Jacob Tighe, ALAH (unanimous) and Lucas Floyd, Sullivan-Okaw Valley. Cooper Christensen of Sullivan-Okaw Valley was named to first team-quarterback. Aian Fryman of Sullivan-Okaw Valley was named to first team-running back. Aiden Ballinger of Sullivan-Okaw Valley was named to first team-wide receiver. Nathan Tighe of ALAH was named to first team-defensive lineman. Maddix Stirrett of ALAH and Demarkus Moore of Sullivan-Okaw Valley were named to first team-linebacker. Aiden Ballinger of Sullivan-Okaw Valley was named to first team-defensive back. Kaden Herschberger of ALAH was named to first team place kicker. Brody Louden of ALAH and Mason Booker of Sullivan-Okaw Valley were unanimously named to second team-offensive lineman. Mackenly Bowles of ALAH was also named. Jayce Parson of ALAH was named second team-quarterback. Landon Waldrop of ALAH was named to second team-running back. Seth Forlines of Sullivan-Okaw Valley was named to second team-wide receiver. Elijah Duzan-Beller of Sullivan-Okaw Valley and Jeffery Arwine of ALAH were named to second team-defensive lineman. Hayden Moody of Sullivan-Okaw Valley was named to second team-defensive back. Honorable mention was made to Wyatt Poyner, Sullivan-Okaw Valley-Offensive Lineman, Landon Waldrop, ALAH-Punter, Jacob Tighe, ALAH-Defensive Lineman, Easton Frederick, ALAH-Linebacker, Mason Booker, Sullivan-Okaw Valley-Linebacker and Seth Forlines, Sullivan-Okaw Valley-Defensive Back.
