Moultrie Amateur Radio Klub hosts “Hamfest”

On April 26th, members of the Moultrie Amateur Radio Klub (MARK) held the first of two annual “Hamfests” at the American Legion Hall. Approximately 75 ham radio enthusiasts from all over Central Illinois gathered to sell, buy, or trade all manner of ham radio equipment, electronics, tools, and all related to ham radio. It was part flea market, part swap meet.

Shane Ramos, President of the Klub, said, “Besides the swapping and trading, we also administer the test here for those seeking to get their ham radio license.” He added, “Our next Hamfest will be in the Fall, and they are always open to the public.”

The Moultrie Klub has been in existence for more than 60 years and meets on the third Monday of each month at the Honey Bee restaurant in Mattoon. Dinner is at 5:00 p.m. with the meeting at 6:00 p.m. Visitors and those interested in joining the Klub are always welcome.

Recreation of a distracted/impaired driving accident at SHS

On Thursday, April 24th at 10:30 a.m. in the Sullivan High School parking lot, students witnessed a dramatic and emotional demonstration with the goal of highlighting the dangers and consequences of drinking and distracted driving.

In a coordinated effort, the Sullivan Fire and Police Departments, the Moultrie County Sheriff’s Office, Moultrie County Coroner Lynn Reed, and McMullin-Young Funeral Home staged a realistic mock car accident. This powerful event was designed to show students the real-life consequences of impaired and distracted driving.

SHS May 2025 Baccalaureate

In honor of celebrating the achievements of Sullivan High School’s Class of 2025, the community of Sullivan is invited to attend SHS’s Baccalaureate. This event will be held at Building 1225 on May 4th at 6:00 p.m.

The baccalaureate is a cherished tradition that offers an opportunity for reflection, inspiration, and celebration as Sullivan’s graduates prepare to embark on their next journey. It’s a time to come together as a community to honor their accomplishments and offer our support and best wishes for their futures, whether as a parent, family member, teacher, friend, neighbor, or anyone else who wishes to bless the class of 2025. All attending are valued and appreciated.

Refreshments will be provided, offering a chance to mingle and congratulate our graduating seniors, coming together to celebrate their hard work, dedication, and resilience.

LWWC to host event with focus on mental health

On Tuesday, May 13th, at 6:00 p.m. at the Family Life Center in Lovington, LWWC will be hosting guest speaker Alexandria Poe, LCSW, MSW, MEd, who will discuss the importance of mental health and mental health awareness. Attendees are encouraged to bring a friend. In light of May celebrating Mother’s Day, this will be a great event for mothers and daughters to attend together.

OVHS announces Wolfie Awards

The 4th Annual Wolfie Awards will be held on Friday, May 2nd at 7:00 PM. This event recognizes our OVHS Student-athletes for their accomplishments. All student-athletes, parents, and community members are invited to attend. The event will be held at Okaw Valley High School, 709 South Saint John St., Bethany.

Windsor’s K-6 Spring Concert

Recent Obituaries: Wayne M. Brown

Wayne M. Brown, 87, of Lovington, passed away 7:10 a.m. Monday, April 28, 2025, at St. Mary’s Hospital, Decatur.

Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, May 2, 2025, in Keller Cemetery, Lovington. Memorials may be made to the donor’s choice. McMullin-Young Funeral Home is in care of the arrangements.

Wayne was born October 23, 1937; the son of Homer and Tressie (Dunning) Brown. He served in the National Guard. Wayne married Rosemary Lee Rainey on April 8, 1971, in Lovington; she survives. He enjoyed fishing, gardening, traveling and dancing all over the world with his wife. Wayne was a good cook and many people enjoyed his Fish Frys.

He is survived by his wife, Rosemary of Lovington; sons, Eric (Lisa) Brown of Dalton, GA, and Tony Brown of Lovington; daughters, Tina (Jeff) Stovall of Charleston and Terri (John) Hilgers of Arizona; sisters, Betty Bolsen of Sullivan and Renae Lothman of Arkansas; grandchildren, Tony (Stephani) Brown, Nick Brown, Dakota Ostler and Madison (Jordan) Chamberlain; great-grandchildren, Quinn Brown, Rowan Brown and Evan Chamberlain.

He was preceded in death by his parents, 2 sisters Geneva Cross and Ruth Childress.

Harold E. Renfro

Harold E. Renfro, 91 of Lovington, went to be with the Lord and his beloved wife and son at 2:28 AM Friday, April 25, 2025, at Eastview Terrace, Sullivan.
Services to celebrate Harold’s life will be held at 11 am Monday, April 28, 2025, at the First Church of God in Lovington. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the services at the church. Interment will be in Keller Cemetery, Lovington. Graceland/Fairlawn Funeral Home is assisting the family with the arrangements. Memorials are suggested to the First Church of God in Lovington.
Harold was born on March 11, 1934, in St. Louis, MO, a son of Earnest W. and Vera E. (Atkinson) Renfro. He was a retired supervisor for Caterpillar. Harold was an active dedicated member of the First Church of God where he served s a Deacon. He also took great pride in maintaining and scheduling the church’s community building that he helped build. Harold was always busy, ready to drive a group to dinner, going boating, mushrooms hunting and he loved to garden. He also had many rental properties and grew very close to the families he took care of. Harold also served on the Village Board for several years. Harold married Donette A. Grabow on July 3, 1954, in Hillsboro. They celebrate 60 years of marriage before she passed away on January 25, 2015.
Surviving are sons Skip and his wife Debbie Renfro, Bob and his wife Marylisa Renfro, daughter Bev and her husband Scott Connelly, and daughter-in-law Diane Renfro all of Lovington, brother John (Jane) Renfro of Lovington, sister- Vicki (David) Stadge of Delaware, OH, and brother Hiram (Rose) Renfro of Donnellson, brother in law Walter and his wife Mary Grabow of Normal, 8 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren.
Harold was greeted in Heaven by Jesus, his beloved wife Donette and his son, Gerald “Jerry” Renfro, his parents, brother, Robert “Bob” Renfro and sister, Lydia Collins.
