The Lincoln Prairie Conference announced the Girls Basketball All-Conference teams with several area girls receiving honors. Earning first team honors were senior Addison Minor (unanimous selection) and senior Emily Miller from Sullivan and sophomore Sophie Monts of ALAH. Senior Shae Ellis of Sullivan earned 2nd Team selection and sophomore Morgan Casteel of ALAH senior Julia Schrock of Okaw Valley earned honorable mention.

Nellie (Spencer) Stevens, of Decatur, IL, went to her heavenly home on March 9, 2025. Her firm belief in Jesus Christ as her personal savior, led her to a life of committed discipleship, sharing her faith with all who knew her.

A Sullivan man was brought up on preliminary first-degree murder charges Tuesday afternoon in connection with the death of a 43-year-old woman on March 4.
Not only can a good storyline reside within the pages of a book but so can the opportunity for a good conversation. Sullivan Middle School student Sarah DeLong wanted to get the conversation started when she was inspired by the Mattoon reading group, Read Across Mattoon. She had come across a book that the group had been reading while at Common Grounds. DeLong had asked language arts teacher Rikki Ray about possibly starting something similar in Sullivan. “How could I turn her down?” replied Ray. After writing a grant to the Sullivan Community Education Foundation, One Book One Sullivan was formed in 2007.

The City of Sullivan Fire Department will provide free smoke detectors and install them for local homeowners in their fire district. They will also provide free smoke detectors to renters if the landlord contacts the fire department on behalf of the tenant. Landlords are required to have both smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors in rental units. Sullivan Fire Chief Chris Wright stated, “natural gas detectors are also a great idea if you have natural gas appliances in the home, as people can become “nose blind” to the smell over time.”

The Sullivan City Council approved a new labor contract, some tax increment financing agreements, and a plan to hold monthly entertainment on the city square during a busy meeting Monday night.
The council approved an agreement with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) for a new contract for city Water Department workers. The agreement still needs to be ratified by union members.
“We think it’s a good agreement,” said council member Chuck Woodworth.

Founded in 2007, and funded by Rotary under Rotary Club’s reading initiative, “One Book, One Sullivan” connects middle school and high school students with the community at large through reading. Each yearly event allows students to interact with adults in the community where they discuss the book chosen by the students. Students learn better communication, leadership, and critical thinking skills in this program, monthly student meetings and this yearly public event.

The C.E.F.S Economic Opportunity Corporation’s Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) still has funding available for winter utility assistance. LIHEAP provides one-time grants to help income eligible households pay for their winter heating expenses.
Any household that has applied as of October 1, 2024, or after would not be eligible to apply again unless they are being disconnected from their utility service. Applications will be taken on a first come-first serve basis through August 15, 2025, or until funding is exhausted.
C.E.F.S. began taking LIHEAP applications on October 1, 2024, for the current program year 2025. To date in Moultrie County energy benefits totaling $212,575.00 have been approved for 343 households. The average payment per household is $620. Additionally, in Moultrie County 45 households received $29,014.00 in emergency reconnection assistance. The average reconnection assistance payment is $645.
Households must be at or below 200% of the federal poverty level to receive a benefit from LIHEAP. The 30-day income guidelines for LIHEAP are based on Federal Poverty Guidelines, State Median Income and the number of persons living in the household. The income guidelines are as follows:
1 - $2,510, 2 - $3,407, 3 - $4,303, 4 - $5,200.
Go to www.cefseoc.org or liheapillinois.com to know income limits for households with 5 members and more. Required items to apply include:
Proof of gross income from all household members for the prior 30-day period beginning with the date of application.
For all customers new to LIHEAP, and/or for new household members of previous customers, proof of Social Security numbers (SSN) or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) for all household members. Individuals without an SSN or ITIN can still apply and C.E.F.S. will advise accordingly.
A copy of current heat and electric bills issued within the last 30 days.
A copy of rental agreement (if renting) showing that utilities are included, the monthly rental amount, and landlord contact.
Other documents may be needed based on your household situation. If you have questions regarding this, please call our office.

In order that no one is denied the opportunity to make an application, we will continue take applications in-person or by phone. Required documentation can be submitted in-person, by mail, or electronically. If you require any special accommodations, contact the local C.E.F.S. Outreach office in your county to arrange these accommodations.
Funding for LIHEAP is provided through the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, and the Illinois Department of Commerce & Economic Opportunity (DCEO). C.E.F.S. Economic Opportunity Corporation is the local administering agency for Christian, Clay, Effingham, Fayette, Montgomery, Moultrie, and Shelby counties.

The Bethany Fire Department will be hosting their annual pancake breakfast on March 15th from 7:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. at the Bethany Fire Department.
Breakfast options are either pancakes and sausage or biscuits and gravy. Cost is $12.00 for adults, $8.00 for kids, and those 3 and under eat free.

The Bethany Senior Citizen Potluck will be held on Wednesday, March 19 at 11 am at the Bethany library. Ham and beans, and cornbread will be furnished. All are welcome.
