Recent Obituaries: Dorothy Ellen McComas

Dorothy Ellen McComas

Dorothy Ellen McComas passed away Wednesday, March 8, 2023, at the age of 95 while residing at Lakewood Senior Living in Boiling Springs, South Carolina.

Dorothy was born June 9,1927 in Caldwell, IL to the late Carl and Mary (Lee) Fleischauer. She is a graduate of Lovington Township High School, Class of 1945, Lovington, IL. Her life took her to Kansas City, Ks where she met Charles Dale McComas Piper, Kansas.
She and Dale wed in May of 1947 and made their home on the farming in Edwardsville and then Piper, Ks. Together they had and raised four children, Albert, Samuel, Charles and Robert. During Dale’s illness and subsequent death, Dorothy entered the life of retail. Upon her retirement, she returned to Lovington, IL to attend to the care of her parents. Following their death, she moved to Boiling Springs, SC to live with her son Samuel and his wife Marsha. In 2018 Dorothy entered Lakewood Senior Living, LLC in Boiling Springs where she resided until her death.
She is survived by her sisters Edna, Decatur, Il; Regina, Belton, Tx and her children, Albert (Al)of Piper, KS: Samuel (Sam) of Boiling Springs, SC; Charles (Chuck) of Seffner, FL and Robert (Rob) of Grand Prairie, TX and numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.
A memorial service was held at Lakewood Senior Living March 15, 2023 at 2 PM. Burial services will be held in Lovington, IL at a later date.

Sleep Awareness Week, March 12-18, highlights the importance of good sleep. With everyone moving their clocks ahead one hour on Sunday, March 12 with the start of Daylight Savings Time, sleep schedules may be affected. Read More

Lake Shelbyville Fish Habitat Improvement Day

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), Illinois Department of Natural Resources and Lake Shelbyville Fish Habitat Alliance (LSFHA) will place donated Christmas trees and artificial structures into Lake Shelbyville to enhance the fisheries on March 25, 2023. Volunteers are needed on shore to help bundle and place trees in boats. To volunteer, meet at the Dam West Recreation Area boat ramp parking lot by 8:30 a.m. Volunteers are required to sign in prior to starting work at 9:00 a.m. A free lunch will be provided. Read More

We often think of the importance of play early in childhood, but there is value throughout childhood, even through adolescence. Extension Educator Judy Schmidt says in her article: My children are 11 and 13 now and the way we play together has changed over time, but there are still many benefits to encouraging play at their age, including practicing self-regulation, learning to adapt and compromise, as well as just having a way to release from the stress and busyness of their days. Smith Signs with Eureka College
Chloe Smith signed her national letter of intent to play softball and basketball at Eureka College next year. Some of her accomplishments include the softball Offensive Award, Redskin Award basketball. She is also involved in or has been involved in Spanish Club, Volleyball, Basketball, Softball, FCA, a member of the NHS, Student Council, Art Club, Book Club, FFA all while being a High Honor Roll student. One Book, One Sullivan held their community discussion on Tuesday, March 7 at Sullivan United Methodist Church. There were about 70 students and community members in attendance for their 16th annual meeting. This year’s book was The Blackbird Girls by Anne Blankman.

SES Preschool carnival a hit

On Thursday, May 15th SES and PTO sponsored a Preschool Carnival that included lunch, face painting, bounce houses, snow cone truck, playground activities, and games set up by sponsoring attendees. Pictured is Jasper Rhodes, age 5, who actively enjoyed everything on offer, including chasing bubbles.
