Moultrie Independent Telephone Company recently awarded Aaron Fleming, a junior at Millikin University and a 2012 graduate of Lovington High School, a $1,500 academic scholarship funded by the Fund for Rural Education and Development, or FRED, which is a national charitable foundation located in Washington, D.C.

Samantha Fenton of Sullivan has received a certificate of recognition and a monetary award to pursue educational training. Fenton is currently a Certified Nurse Assistant and plans to further her career in the medical field and become a Licensed Practical Nurse by attending Lake Land College.  Read More

The MCHD to offer “Caregiver Stress-Busting”

The Moultrie County Health Department (MCHD) is pleased to offer “Caregiver Stress-Busting.” This program is offered to support family and other non-paid caregivers who care for an individual living with dementia. Two trained facilitators lead the program, which focuses on education, support, problem-solving, and stress management. As a result, participating caregivers learn how to recognize and address their emotional, physical, spiritual, and cognitive needs. 

Participants will meet weekly on Thursday afternoons, September 5 – October 31, from 1:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the MCHD offices, located at 202 S. Main Street, Sullivan, IL. There is no cost for this program. Registration remains open until Tuesday, September 3, 2024.

City Council changes meeting dates

Sullivan City Council meetings are moving from the first and third Thursdays to the second and fourth Thursday after a vote Thursday night by the council. Mayor Mike Mossman said changing the meeting dates will give city employees more time to complete actions including getting the city’s bills ready for payment by council vote. “It will just make everything go more smoothly,” he said.

The meeting date change came as part of a series of actions the council took after an audit revealed what Mossman called “significant deficiencies in internal controls.” The council has hired 2020 Forensic Accounting of Bethany to, according to Mossman, “look at our accounting practices.”  Read More

Bethany’s Kate Jeffers graduates

Bethany resident Kate Jeffers celebrated a major academic milestone on May 12, 2024, graduating from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign with a Bachelor of Science in Speech and Hearing Sciences. Kate was honored with the distinction of Highest Honors and was a consistent presence on the Dean’s List during her four years at Illinois.

In addition to her degree, Kate earned a minor in Disability Studies, which she pursued while studying abroad at University College Dublin in Ireland. Her international experience enriched her academic journey and broadened her perspective on global approaches to disability and speech sciences.

Kate is set to continue her education at the University of Illinois, where she will be enrolled in the Master’s program in Speech and Hearing Sciences. Her dedication to her field and impressive academic achievements highlight her commitment to advancing her expertise and contributing to the field of speech and hearing.

Blood Drive

The Sullivan American legion will be hosting an honor blood drive for Jodi Phelps. There will be door prizes at the event and snacks provided, donations of door prizes and snacks can also be made. Microchip clinic

The Village of Lovington will be hosting a PAWS Microchip clinic on Sunday, September 15th from 1-2:30 in the afternoon at the Lovington Fire House located at 120 South County Street. The base fee for a microchip is $15, cats and dogs are welcome however dogs must be leashed and cats must be crated in a carrier. Registration for the clinic is now open and can be found at https://forms.gle/A36ALMmD31D2HWq29. This clinic is not area specific, any and all are welcome to register. Sullivan School Districts officially welcomed students back through school doors within the second week of August, however the beloved specialty drink vender SweeTea’z just had to sweeten to deal for those incoming pupils. Wednesday, August 14th SweeTea’z set up shop right on the corner of route 121 and 32 to welcome back students, faculty and parents to this sweetening school year. The vender created 3 special flavored drinks for the school district. Read More

Pickleball is an American original. The popularity of pickleball has risen sharply in recent years, and a recent report from the Association of Pickleball Professionals indicated more than 36 million people played the sport across the United States in 2022. But pickleball is much older than its recent participation boom suggests. According to USA Pickleball, the sport is the brainchild of U.S. congressman Joel Pritchard and businessman Bill Bell. In 1965, Prichard and Bell arrived at the former’s home on Bainbridge Island in Washington to find their families lounging around. Pritchard’s property had an old badminton court, but no equipment. So the players improvised, using ping pong paddles and a perforated plastic ball. The net, initially around 60 inches high, was lowered once the players realized how well the ball bounced on the asphalt playing surface. The following weekend Pritchard introduced the game to another friend, Barney McCallum, and the two men and Bell soon created rules for the game that is now known as pickleball.
