What’s wrong with Sarah?

Sarah sat in her favorite chair, staring blankly at the family photos on the mantelpiece. Her husband, James, noticed her distant gaze and gently touched her shoulder to get her attention. “Are you all right, sweetheart?” he asked, with concern in his voice.

Poppys Day
The Sullivan American Auxilary was set up Friday at Kirby Foods selling poppies. Each year millions of Americans wear little red poppies in memory of those who have died in all wars and to assist in the rehabilitation of those Veterans who are now hospitalized suffering from wounds and illness. Several students excel in art and writing contest

Several Sullivan students were honored April 28th for their entries in ‘Through Their Eyes: A Holocaust Art and Writing Contest’ sponsored by the Holocaust Education Center (HEC) of the Champaign-Urbana Jewish Federation. 

“The contest focused on honoring Holocaust victims, both Jewish and non-Jewish, along with resisters, rescuers and liberators,” noted Rebecca Lawson, contest coordinator and HEC co-director.

“We asked teachers to involve their students in the contest by creating artwork, poetry, prose, or film that would highlight their creative talents while helping them connect to individuals impacted by the Holocaust,” she added. Read More

Remembrance

Photos by R.R. Best Remembrance A Memorial Day observance was held in Sullivan on Monday morning. Since 1971, when Congress declared Memorial Day a national holiday, it has continued to be a dedicated day for honoring U.S. military personnel who have died while serving in the United States armed forces. Over 1.3 Million Americans have paid the ultimate sacrifice for their nation. The ceremony was led by the Sullivan American Legion.

JuneFest

The Village of Lovington will hold their JuneFest event on June 8 at Thomas L. Conn Park from 4-7 p.m. Free kids entertainment will be provided including a bounce house, face painting, obstacle house, dry slide, rock wall, extreme air and nichols power wheel derby and races. The Lovington Community Club will hold its annual Fish Fry starting at 4:30 p.m. in the pavillion. Cost is $10 for adults, $4 children five and up, $2 children four and under. As always, Veterans eat free. From 6 to 9 p.m. there will also be several food trucks on the grounds of the Lovington Grade School, a DJ and at dusk fireworks will take place.

Dash and Bash Car Show

The Sullivan Street Machine Association will host the St. Jude Dash and Bash Car Show in Wyman Park, Sullivan on Saturday June 8.Registration begins at 10 a.m., the show is from 11 to 1:30 p.m. with awards presented at 2:30. Windsor CleanUp

Windsor will hold the annual city cleanup day on Saturday, June 8 from 7 a.m. to noon. The dumpsters will be located at the old street shed, volunteers will pick up items at peoples homes if the owner is unable to drop off. Items must be out by the road by 8 a.m. No paint, electronics or batteries will be accepted. Appliances will cost $5 each, tires without rims $5 each and tires with rims and semi tire $10 each.

The deadline to turn in rummage sales for the Sullivan Townwide Rummage for free is Thursday, May 30. Any sale after that date will be charged.

Head of the class - OVHS

Gabriel Benning was named Valedictorian of the Okaw Valley graduating class of 2024. Gabe plans on attending Princeton University in the fall. He played multiple sports throughout his high school career, including golf, baseball, and basketball. He was a member of the OV Scholastic Bowl Team and held the office of President of the OV Student Council and the OV NHS. 

Cannon Bernstein was named Salutatorian of the class. : Cannon plans to attend LLC this fall after receiving the Presidential Scholarship. He was on the OVHS golf team all four years of his high school career, Varsity Scholastic Bowl his senior year and held the office of Secretary of the Okaw Valley National Honor Society.

Graduation was held Saturday, May 11in the OVHS Gym.
