Lead exposure and our children

News Progress Posted on April 17, 2024 by webmasterApril 17, 2024

•April 17, 2024•

Why are children particularly susceptible, and what can parents do about it?

By Angela Hogan

Lead exposure is a serious health concern for children, with potentially devastating consequences. Unfortunately, its exposure in children can occur and accumulate almost undetected.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), children at highest risk for lead exposure are typically under age 6, from low-income households, or reside in homes built before 1978.

Based on available data, the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) currently recognizes most ZIP codes in Moultrie County as having an increased risk of pediatric lead exposure.

Parents and caregivers should be vigilant for potential sources of lead in their children’s environment. They need to remove or mitigate these exposure sources and know how and when to seek healthcare intervention. Read More

Road access closed

News Progress Posted on April 17, 2024 by webmasterApril 17, 2024

•April 17, 2024•

The road across the main dam at Lake Shelbyville will be closed thru Friday, April 19th and again Monday, April 22nd thru Friday, April 26th. The road will be open for weekend traffic. The closures apply to both vehicle and pedestrian traffic. However, access to the Dam West Overlook area will continue to be open during this time.

These closures are necessary to provide safety for workers and members of the general public while work is being conducted. The closure is a result of a new electric feeder line being installed to the main dam.

The Corps of Engineers recognizes the impact of road closures on the general public and apologizes for any inconveniences it may cause. For additional information, contact the Lake Shelbyville Project Office at (217) 774-3951.
