What Did a Trillion Tons of Glacial Ice Do to Moultrie County?

Well, duh…it flattened it, of course. But, that’s not all it did.
When the Wisconsin Glacier came down from Canada 30,000 years ago or so, it brought tons and tons of dirt, gravel, rocks, and sand with it that it picked up along the way. When global warming began 14,000 – 18,000 years ago and melted the ice, it left up to 200 feet of this debris, called glacial till, on top of everywhere the glacier reached.
The weight of the ice and glacial drift depressed the earth’s crust, and shifted the viscous mantle below it. Like a teeter-totter, its weight pushed up the surface of the ice-free areas south of it. When the ice melted, post-glacial rebound began and continues to this day. Every century, the elevation of northeastern and central Illinois is rising from 3 to 4 feet, while land to the south is lowering. Bridge builders have to pay attention to that fact. Read More

The city council Monday moved forward with combining computer networks across the City of Sullivan’s departments. As a follow up on the discussion and recommendation made by the council at the Feb. 24 meeting, the city moved forward to have QNS combine the computer networks of the different departments into one that can be monitored, tracked, and protected as a unit.
The Sullivan school board approved three types of measures Monday evening in a special meeting concerning reduction in force. Faced with potentially steeper cuts in state aid payments for the next school year, the board approved nine resolutions totaling approximately $65,000 in cuts, including the honorable dismissal of Brent Weakly, a physical education teacher at Sullivan Middle School. According to the 2023 Surgeon General’s Advisory, around 20% of adults in the United States reported feeling lonely or socially isolated.
Loneliness and isolation are separate but related concepts. Isolation is a lack of social connections, while loneliness is the emotional experience of feeling alone, even when surrounded by others.
Overall, older adults, people with disabilities, and geographically isolated people are particularly vulnerable to loneliness. Social and economic factors such as poverty, unemployment, and discrimination also increase the risk of loneliness and isolation. Read More
City Council Makes Appointments, Receives Planning Report

The Sullivan City Council made several personnel changes and appointments and received what was called a “roadmap to future development” at their regular council meeting Thursday night.
The council took action to appoint deputy treasurer Nakayla Swisher as Interim Treasurer following the resignation of treasurer Jill Bushue. Mayor Mike Mossman said Swisher, City Clerk Carrie Creek and he would all be available to sign checks for the city. The council also gave Street Department employee Ryan Nuding permission to enter into contracts and joint participation agreements between Sullivan and the State of Illinois. Commissioner Douglas Shook said the authorization would help with purchasing items through the state in addition to executing plans between agencies. Read More

Bushue Recognized as a 2024 State FFA Proficiency Winner

Kate Bushue was selected as the State FFA Proficiency Winner in Food Service Entrepreneurship. She was previously chosen as the Chapter, Section, and District awardee of this area.
Illinois FFA recognizes students in forty-eight different areas based on their work-based learning, also known as Supervised Agricultural Experiences (SAEs). FFA members who demonstrate outstanding agricultural skills and competencies through record keeping, leadership, and scholastic achievement may be considered for this award. Read More

LLC Offering Tuition Discount

Lake Land College is offering up to $100 in tuition savings for all students who register for Summer or Fall 2024 classes by midnight on May 10.
Students who meet the criteria will receive a $50 tuition and fee credit for each registered semester. By registering for both summer and fall classes, students can receive the maximum incentive of $100.
To be eligible for the tuition credit, students must be enrolled in a minimum of three credit hours for summer and six credit hours for fall.
The promotion is available to all current and incoming Lake Land College students.

Scholarship Available to ALAH Students

The Robert and Leila Lorenson $500 Scholarship will once again be offered to high school students and postsecondary students. Students must be graduates from ALAH high school.
