Christmas Raffle

C.E.F.S. is holding a Christmas raffle for Illinois Legacy Seats until Wednesday, December 20. Tickets are $25 and the winner will receive two tickets to the game of their choice (of available tickets at time of drawing) during the 2023-24 Illinois men’s basketball season. Seats are located in the Legacy Club, section 135, of State Farm Center and has pregame access to exclusive concessions. Tickets will be distributed electronically upon selection. Only 250 tickets will be sold for the raffle. Tickets can be purchased from C.E.F.S. Moultrie County Outreach office located at 114 S. Harrison St in Sullivan, Loman Ray Insurance, 13 S. Main Street in Sullivan and Cathrine’s Gallery, 7 W. Jefferson St. in Sullivan. All sales will benefit Moultrie County families this Christmas.

Breakfast with Santa

Sullivan FCCLA will have Breakfast with Santa on Saturday, December 9 from 8 to 10 am at the SHS commons. Breakfast will include two pancakes per person and drink choices of hot chocolate, coffee, juice or milk. The event will include activities, crafts, cookie decorating and a chance to take photos with Santa. Entry is free. Kids are encouraged to wear their pajamas. The Sullivan royalty and the Illinois FCCLA officer team will be in attendance reading Christmas stories. The first 150 kids in attendance will receive a goody bag to take home. Recent Obituaries: Charlene Joyce Elzy

Charlene Joyce Elzy

Charlene Joyce Elzy, 86, of Sullivan, passed away at 7:44 p.m. Tuesday November 28, 2023 in Sarah Bush Hospital, Mattoon.

Celebration of Life services will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday December 2, 2023 in the Reed Funeral Home, Sullivan with Pastor Bob Vail officiating. Visitation will be Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until service time. Burial will be in the Jonathan Creek Cemetery, Sullivan. Memorials are suggested to the family. Online condolences may be sent to the family at reedfuneralhome.net.
Charlene was born July 17, 1937 in Arthur, the daughter of Thomas and Erma Kercheval Jocelyn. She had worked at the State Bank of Arthur and then was a homemaker. She later worked at the Villa and Shoes Too in Arthur and was an Avon Representative. Charlene had been a member of the Arthur United Methodist Church and the Jonathan Creek Christian Church. She married Clifford Gale Elzy on October 10, 1958 in Arthur.
Charlene dedicated her life to her family and enjoyed spending time with them most. She also enjoyed baking, knitting, playing yahtzee with her husband and tending to her flowers.
Surviving are her husband Clifford Gale Elzy of Sullivan; sons Lyle Elzy of Sullivan and Jeff (Rachel) Elzy of Sullivan; daughter Jennifer (Tom) Lambdin of Bethany; grandchildren Aaron (Jamie) Elzy, Brandon Elzy, Hilari (Tyler) Willdrick, Cassandra Lambdin, Kendra Elzy, Hayden Elzy (Breea Brown), Elizabeth Lambdin, Hannah Elzy, Tyler (Kyleigh) Elzy, Natalie (Mikhail) Smith, Bralyn Elzy and Brixtyn Elzy and eight great grandchilden.
She was preceded in death by her parents, son Mark, two sisters and a brother.
The grandchildren of Charlene would like to extend gratitude and additional sympathy to Charlene’s youngest daughter, Jennifer, who served as her primary caregiver through the end of her life.

Santa is Coming to Bethany

Santa will be coming to Bethany on Sunday, December 3 from 3:00 to 4:30 pm at the Bethany Train Depot. There will be cookies and hot chocolate at the library and a tree lighting at the village hall. There will also be door prizes. Attendees are encouraged to bring a non-perishable food item for the Bethany Food Pantry. The event is sponsored by the Village of Bethany, BASO and Bethany businesses.

The Sullivan AmBuCs chapter provided a bike for 12 year old Zoe Powell who dreamed of being able to ride a bike but was born with a condition that a traditional bike would not be an option for her. AmTrykes can be operated via hand or food pedal to accommodate different needs. 

The Lovington Girl Scout Troop 3009 conducted their annual food drive collecting more than 500 pounds of nonperishable food and paper goods for Lovington’s Christ Pantry which supplies food to those in need not only in Lovington but in surrounding communities.

One Book One Sullivan announced their book choice for the community to be “Lions of Little Rock.” Read More

Upcoming Blood Drives

ImpactLife will be holding several upcoming blood drives in the month of December. There will be a drive at Mid-State Tank on Tuesday, December 12 from 7:00 am to Noon on a donor bus at 1357 Jonathan Creek Road, Sullivan. There will also be a drive at Agri-Fab Inc. on Friday, December 15 from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm in the Gold Classroom at 809 S. Hamilton Street. The Cadwell community will have a blood drive on Tuesday, December 19 from 3:00 to 7:00 pm in a donor bus parked by M&E Woodcrafts at 1533 CR 1900N. One Book One Sullivan Reveals This Book Choice During Assembly

One Book, One Sullivan chose the 2023-2024 book and announced it during an assembly on Tuesday, November 21. Members of OBOS are Wes Allen, Madeline Anderson, Madeline Atteberry, Violet Cohan, Isabelle Donovan, Emma Drake, Alex Fultz, Aubrey Fultz, Kent Lehman, Clara Miller, Scarlett Perrott, Avery Renfro, Daisy Richardson, Ronin Woods, Emery Wade, Gideon Walk and Rikki Ray.

One Book, One Sullivan is excited to present City Spies by James Ponti as the 2023-2024 book choice. Sullivan Middle School students worked diligently to choose the book which would best match interests of middle school through adult readers.

According to the author’s website, www.jamesponti.com, Sarah Martinez is a hacker facing years in juvenile detention, until she meets Mother, a spy who gets her out of jail and into MI6, British Secret Intelligence. Operating out of a castle in Scotland, the City Spies are five kids from around the world who’ve fallen through the cracks only to form a family like no other. When they’re not at the local boarding school, they’re mastering spy skills such as sleight of hand, breaking and entering, covert observation, and explosives. Sullivan Elementary School recently received 60 backpacks filled with school supplies through Amazon’s “Together, We Give Back to School” campaign. End of the Line Tackle & Bait, an Amazon delivery partner, nominated Sullivan Elementary for the program, and the school’s submission was selected to receive the donation.
