Injuries, penalties, and turnovers, oh my! The Nokomis Redskins came into town last Friday looking to spoil Sullivan’s homecoming. Both teams played neck and neck with the Redskins of Sullivan/Okaw Valley being triumphant in the end on a final touchdown with a minute and a half left in the game.

SOV struggled with penalties all evening, the first coming on the first play of a game calling back a 52 yard reception by junior Seth Forlines from senior Aiden Ballinger. Two plays later, junior quarterback Cooper Christensen tossed an interception. It was one of three interceptions thrown by SOV in the game. SOV’s defense came out strong on the first set of Nokomis downs, but a pass interference on a fourth and eight put the wind from SOV’s sails right behind Nokomis as they completed the eight play drive of 66 yards for their first touchdown of the game. News Progress Posted on October 11, 2023 by webmasterOctober 11, 2023

•October 11, 2023•

During Fire Prevention Week (October 8-14), the American Red Cross of Greater Chicago, reminds everyone that cooking is the leading cause of home fires and issues safety steps to follow to help avoid one of these blazes.

“The top reason for cooking fires is someone leaving the stove unattended while cooking,” said Mark Thomas, Interim CEO for the Red Cross of Illinois. “Cooking brings family and friends together, but this normal, everyday activity can also lead to disaster. In fact, cooking is the leading cause of home fires in the U.S. To help keep your loved ones safe, it’s important to stay in the kitchen while you’re cooking.”

Follow these 10 steps to help stay safe while cooking:

1. If you are frying, grilling or broiling food, never leave it unattended — stay in the kitchen. If you leave the kitchen for even a short period of time, turn off the stove.  Read More

Early Detection is Most Effective Way to Fight Breast Cancer

News Progress Posted on October 11, 2023 by webmasterOctober 11, 2023

•October 11, 2023•

With National Breast Cancer Awareness Month underway across the country, Governor JB Pritzker and the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) are reminding the public that early detection is the most effective way to prevent the deadly disease. The Governor has issued a proclamation declaring October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month and October 20 as Mammography Day in Illinois. However public health officials are urging Illinoisans not to wait and to schedule a comprehensive exam as soon as possible.

“Regular mammograms can help detect breast cancer at an early stage when treatment is most successful. That’s why it’s important that anyone who delayed screenings during the pandemic should schedule an exam with their provider,” Governor Pritzker said. “And for those who are uninsured or underinsured, IDPH operates the Illinois Breast and Cervical Cancer Program which offers free mammograms and other important services.” Read More
