A 25 year family tradition came to a close when the late Charles Elder’s three sons and other friends gathered Sept. 4 to bale the family’s 12 acres of hay. Elder started his hay baling business for his three sons, Kevin, Steve and Tom in the spring of 1973. The three brothers, using an old gas baler, ran the business until the summer of 1977 when they went their separate ways. Their father upgraded to more modern equipment and continued the business for 21 more years with his sons helping out occasionally. However, Elder had many other helpers during those years and baled hay for many customers in Moultrie and surrounding counties.  Read More

Illinois Amish Heritage Center to host program on quilting techniques

The Illinois Amish Heritage Center will host Sharon K. Jack of Country Home Quilting and More on Saturday, September 30, at 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. on their campus. Cost is $10 which includes admission to the campus and the program. Jack will be doing a techniques demonstration on the evolution of quilting techniques from how her grandmother made quilts and how she makes quilts. She will have samples of the different tools used as well as display boards. Read More

City Council Approves Ordinance Amending Electric Rates

The Sullivan City Council held a meeting Monday, September 11, and voted to approve an ordinance amending electric rates. Commissioner Doug Shook was absent due to being on vacation. Commissioner Mike Kirk said the last council hired a company to do a study, and they broke down the fixed rates including meter reading, meter replacement, billing, customer service, etc.

The total of that was $9.00 currently, but the fees come to $17.37. He said that over the years they are going to get that number. Starting October 1, this will change from $9.00 to $11.80 on residential.

“Every class of rates is charged differently,” he said. Kirk noted the average of all of the six different classes is a 3.5% increase. The ordinance was approved. Read More

Honor Blood Drive for Jodi Phelps
An Honor Blood Drive for Jodi Phelps was held on Saturday, September 9 at the Sullivan American Legion. 90 units of blood were collected during the drive. There were several donors that reached milestones for gallons of blood donated. Lucia Roney has given 17 gallons of blood and Terrie Punches has given 16 gallons of blood. Windsor Junior/Senior High Holds Open House to Showcase Renovations

The gymnasium as Windsor Junior/Senior High, as a result of renovations, has a refinished floor, paint, new bleachers, upgraded scoreboard and eventually air conditioning which has been delayed to Spring 2024 due to part delays.

Windsor Junior/Senior High School had a renovation open house Wednesday, September 6. The open house was to show the newly renovated gym, gym lobby, locker rooms, ladies’ restroom and library. In addition to those renovations there is the addition of air conditioning and electrical upgrades and a large section of tuckpointing done on the 1936 portion of the high school. Read More

CPR and AED Training

On Saturday October 7, at 1:00-3:00 pm, the Arthur Ambulance and Rescue Department will be at the Arthur Public Library to train AED devices as well as CPR. There will only be 16 seats so you must call (217) 543-2037 to reserve yours. 

Sparrows Unlimited Toy Run

The 2023 Sparrows Unlimited Toy Run will be held on Saturday, September 23. Sign up is 11-Noon that day at Lovington Legion. Fee is a new unwrapped toy. All vehicles are welcome and there is a new route this year. This year’s theme is ‘80s.

Decatur Audubon Meeting

The Decatur Audubon Society invites Audubon members and other interested persons to its monthly General Meeting at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 17, at Rock Springs Conservation Center located on the southwest side of Decatur. Allison Bryant, a Field Scientist with the Illinois Natural History Survey through a partnership between the University of Illinois and the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, will share her experience working with Prairie Chicken to restore their habitat and monitor the health of these endangered birds.

National Recovery Month Book Donation

Recovery Oriented Systems of Care (ROSC) honors National Recovery Month by donating age-appropriate books to local schools and libraries within Shelby and Moultrie counties.

According to SAMSHA, National Recovery Month is observed every September to educate the public about mental health and substance use disorders and celebrate the gains that individuals have in recovery. The following books will be donated: The Addiction Monster: A Children’s Guide to Understanding the Dynamics of Drugs and Alcohol by Janet Amptman, My Dad Loves Me, My Dad Has a Disease: A Child’s View: Living with Addiction by Claudia Black, Tweak by Nic Sheff, The Year of My Miraculous Appearance by Catherine Hyde, We All Fall Down: Living with Addiction by Nic Sheff, It Will Never Happen To Me: Growing Up With Addiction as Youngsters, Adolescents, and Adults by Claudia Black, A Beautiful Boy: A Fathers Journey Through His Sons Addiction by David Sheff, Straight Talk from Claudia Black: What Recovering Parents Should Tell Their Kids About Drugs and Alcohol by Claudia Black, A New Pair of Glasses by Chuck C., A Happier Hour by Rebecca Weller.

The Moultrie/Shelby ROSC Council hopes that individuals of all ages will gain understanding and help eliminate the stigmatization of mental health and substance use disorders by donating these books.
