If Only you could Forgive my Dangling Modifier

My friend Peter Page builds high-rises. He knows that if he were to put a beam in the wrong place, the whole thing could come down.
In a much less dramatic, costly and dangerous way, a misplaced word in a sentence can make the whole thing collapse.
I’m not talking about splitting infinitives, which has been downgraded from a mortal sin to a venial one in recent years. I’m talking about misplaced modifiers and dangling modifiers.
Yes, I’ve discussed both before, but given the number of examples I see, some of us still aren’t getting it.

25 Years Ago This Week

Luke Standerfer and Nick Parks went to state in track and came out successful. Standerfer captured a state title in the 3200 and Parks claimed second in the same event.
D&D Liquidation, a new business in Sullivan, scheduled a grand opening. Dave Eckel was owner of the store. The store sold products that were overstocked or discontinued by companies and retailers. They also bought products from bankrupt companies at a reduced price. The store dealt in everything from electronics to office supplies to residential furniture to Beanie Babies.
The Edwards family, John, Karen, Clint and Ben got their kicks two nights a week on the mat of a local Taekwondo Club. All four family members have earned their black belts. The family started at the lowest level, which is a white belt, and worked their way up through the ranks to the ninth level which is the black belt. Read More

ALAH Holds Commencement for Class of 2022

Arthur Lovington Atwood Hammond High School held their commencement on the football field the evening of Friday, May 27. The ceremony began with the Star Spangled Banner played by the high school band, a welcome from class president Jace Green and a selection from the musical Hamilton “History Has Its Eyes on You” by senior choral students.
The salutatorian speech was given by Max Allen. He began his speech with a quote from Olympic gold medalist Jesse Owens, “Friendships born on the field of athletic strife are the real gold of competition. Awards become corroded; friends gather no dust.” Read More

Hart Appointed as Planning and Zoning Director by Moultrie County Board

At the May meeting of the Moultrie County Board, the board appointed a new Planning and Zoning Director. Prior to this appointment the assessor’s office had taken on the responsibilities of planning and zoning. Kristi Hart is the new director of planning and zoning. Read More

Memorial Day Observances 2022

Memorial Day Observances
On Monday, May 30, Memorial Day services were held in Sullivan, Bethany, Findlay and Windsor. At the ceremony in Greenhill Cemetery in Sullivan this year’s speaker was Sullivan Mayor Richard Glazebrook. The Bethany American Legion Post held a service at Marrowbone Township Cemetery by the Civil War monument. Speaking at that ceremony was Pastor Rob Roy.

Upcoming Blood Drives

The Cadwell community will host a blood drive on Tuesday, June 14 from 3 to 7 pm. The donor bus will be parked by M&E Woodcrafts, 1533 CR 1900N in Cadwell. To donate contact ImpactLife Urbana at (800) 747-5401 or visit www.bloodcenter.org and use code 70636 to locate the drive. Masks and appointments are required. Another blood drive will be held at AgriFab Inc. on Wednesday, June 15 from 9 am to 2 pm at 809 S. Hamilton, inside the meeting room. Dash and Bash Car Show

The St. Jude Dash and Bash car show will be Saturday, June 11 in Wyman Park. Registration is 11 am to 1 pm with awards given at 2:30 pm. Tickets $10 only. All vehicles are welcome.

St. Jude Dash and Bash will be held on Friday, June 10 and Saturday, June 11 at the Sullivan American Legion. There will be a raffle and softball on Friday. Saturday’s activities include 5k, softball, bags tournament, duck derby, kids entertainment all day with bags tournament, kids tractor pull, magician and inflatables. Pretzel sales, lemon shakeups and raffle all day with drawing at 7 pm. Beer tent will have music with ten-seventy entertainment dj, live music from Jason Gotts and Silver Lake until 11 pm. Food will be provided all day by Sons of the American Legion starting at 10 am.

Public Test of Equipment

Public Test of the Unisyn Optical Scan (OVO) and Touch Screen (FVT) tabulating equipment to be used for the June 28, 2022 General Primary Election will be held June 13, 2022, at 1:00 p.m. in the Elections Counting Center Room, first floor of the Moultrie County Courthouse in Sullivan. This test is open to candidates, representatives of the political parties, the press and the public.

City of Sullivan Clean Up Day Schedule

The City of Sullivan will be having cleanup days in June. All resident who live north of Harrison Street will be picked up on Tuesday, June 21. All residents on Pifers Lane are picked up that day too. All residents who live south of Harrison Street will be picked up on Tuesday, June 14. If you do not live in the corporate city limits, you are not eligible to participate in the City Wide Clean Up Day and your items will not be picked up. Items must be on the curb by 5 am.

Easter Donation

The Kirby Foods meat department delivered hams to the Moultrie County Food Pantry on Wednesday the 16th, thanks to a generous anonymous donation. The hams will provide a nice Easter dinner.
