Cornelia Faye Coleman, 75, of Sullivan, passed away at 7:59 p.m., Monday, October 10, 2022, at Saint Mary’s Hospital in Decatur. Visitation was held Saturday, October 15, from 10-11 a.m. at Windsor Baptist Church in Windsor, with a Celebration of Life Service immediately following. We all know someone who is providing care for someone else. They may be caring for an older parent, a disabled adult child, or a spouse suffering from a traumatic injury or chronic illness. Even parents raising children are considered caregivers. Caregivers give of themselves without expecting anything in return, and they rarely think of themselves first.
National Family Caregiver Month is coming up in November. According to the 2020 update from the National Alliance for Caregiving and AARP, Caregiving in the U.S. 2020 update, nearly 48 million people in the U.S. provide care for someone over the age of 18. 61% of them continue to work while providing care. Although there tends to be an average profile for caregivers, their population is greatly diverse representing both genders and all races, cultures and ages. It is a rewarding experience for most, but also has many challenges. Caregivers experience many difficult emotions along their journey and can also experience many losses including loss of privacy, freedom, money, identity and work. Read More

Has anyone ever pointed out to you that something you’ve been saying for most of your life is not ... quite ... right?
While singing along to a song from your youth have you come to realize the lyrics you thought you knew were, well, something quite different?
I’ve been there and done that more than I’d like to admit.
Being the oldest child of parents who preferred Beethoven, Shostakovich, Tchaikovsky and Mozart, which are woefully short on lyrics, and Doris Day music, whose lyrics I’d like to forget, I was on my own to develop musical habits.
I had no older kids’ records to listen to. My wife is the youngest of seven, and she was fortunate to have Steppenwolf and a variety of bands and contemporary singers wafting throughout her family’s small Chicago Georgian as soon as she was loosed upon the world. For her, an introduction to music of the ’60s was inescapable. Read More

25 Years Ago This Week
Bethany elementary students marched to the cemetery and watched a 21-gun salute as part of a day-long learning program about Veteran’s Day. Sullivan students were also visited by veterans and observed a flag ceremony.
About 75 Sullivan Community Education Foundation board members, donors and teachers gathered at Sullivan High School for the unveiling of the charter donor and memorial plaques. Read More
Sullivan High School Class of 1968 Honors Class Veterans

SHS Class of 1968 has proudly honored its Class Veterans with two benches located at Wyman Park near Lane Memorial Field. The idea was sparked when Class Veteran, Richard “Huck” Huckstep, was honored with a bench located near Wyman Lake by family and friends. Donations by SHS 1968 Classmates provided the benches and plaques attached to the benches. Class members Dale Hale, Charles Landers and Bill Standerfer are responsible for installation at the site location. Read More
Third Annual Anglers Tribute to Veterans Held

Veterans were celebrate during the Anglers Tribute to Veterans this past weekend. On Friday night was a steak dinner and on Saturday afternoon was a fish fry. Normally veterans are taken on a fishing trip on Saturday morning but that was cancelled due to a high wind advisory. More photos are on page 8.

The Third Annual Anglers Tribute to Veterans was held this past weekend. Usually the event involves taking veterans fishing on Lake Shelbyville along with other events but due to a wind advisory on Saturday the fishing trip on Saturday was not held this year. However there was a steak dinner and veteran and boater introductions on Friday night and a fish fry for veterans and their families on Saturday afternoon with a guest speaker. Read More
Honor Drive for Shoni Anderson Nov. 15

Shoni Anderson, 7, is the daughter of Jeff and Becky Clayton-Anderson, and on Tuesday, November 15, there will be an honor drive for her at the Sullivan American Legion from noon to 6 p.m. Shoni was diagnosed with leukemia in February 2021. According to her mother Becky, this will be the third blood drive held in her daughter’s honor.
The first indication that something was amiss was when she started having severe foot and leg pain. It got to the point where the pain was waking her up at night. Becky said in November 2020 she took her daughter to an orthopedic doctor for lab work and x-rays. The next month they saw a pediatric orthopedic doctor and ruled out osteosarcoma which is a bone cancer. Read More
Mobile Food Pantry

The University of Illinois, in cooperating partnership with Decatur Catholic Charities and Windsor School District will have a mobile food pantry on Wednesday, December 7 from 4 to 5 pm at Windsor Grade School. A mobile food pantry delivers a 2 week supply of food per family in rural communities. Any individual or family that does not have a steady food supply qualifies to receive food. No financial information is required to qualify. The distribution is open to all, not only residents of Windsor. Deadline to sign up is Thursday, December 1. To sign up call 217-774-9546 Monday through Friday from 8 am to Noon and 1 to 4:30 pm. Once your form is completed by phone, you will be given a number to bring with you on the day of distribution. If you lose your number, you need to bring identification. Food will be distributed according to household size at the Windsor Grade School cafeteria.
